New UC Diagnosis

Mon, February 08, 2016 10:19 AM

Hello,

My daughter was just diagnosed with ulcerative colitis - after many Dr. appointments, a couple ER visits, and a hospital stay. She is 20 years old and a college sophomore. She is on prednisone 40mg and Asacol 800mg. She is very anxious/overwhelmed about her new diagnosis and there is no support group in our area (central IL). It is also very frustrating that all UC materials show pics of people in their 60's and older. This makes my daughter feel like she is the only one her age with the disease. I am looking for a little advice regarding how to help her manage her college classes, her nutrition, her stress, nasty side effects of prednisone, etc. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks so much!

I have felt exactly the way she does. I'm in my 20s and diagnosed in April 2015 with severe UC. I also had a rough time getting properly disgnosed, with several trips to the doctor, lots of hospital visits, and having to take a leave from my job. I'm still trying to find the right medication to get me into remission, which is frustrating. For the most part it is possible to maintain a normal life, of course during a flare up is when it becomes a bit diffucult. It has taken some adjusting and coming to terms with my new found situation. I do currently hold down a 55hour per week job, and in my down time I do participate in local film projects, so a normal life is possible with some adjustments here and there. I wish you and your daughter the best of luck in getting into remission. If you guys have any questions or just need someone to talk to ( I know sometimes it nice to have someone who understands ) you can feel free to email me if you want: blueeyedred22@gmail.com

Thank you so much. I will forward this on to her. It would be great for her to chat with someone else in a similar boat.

I am a college student with UC as well. It can be hard to deal with but its not impossible! For me, taking a rest during the day if Im not feeling well helps and making sure I get a lot of sleep. Im sure youve heard that UC doesnt have a universal diet or lifestyle to help, but I definitely know what she is going through so if you have any specific questions about what I do or if she wants to email me as someone who knows what its like, just let me know!! Hope she feels better soon!
