Humira/Remicade and Breast feeding

Tue, March 17, 2009 2:46 PM

Hello all.

I am currently in week 14 with my second child.  Iknow from researching pregnancy while on the various UC meds is vague because of the lack of "official" research that it takes a while to find answers.  I am wondering if anyone has breast fed while on Remicade or Humira.  Or if anyone has information on it.  I am currently on Humira and take an injection every 2 weeks.  No doctors can say a "yes" or "no" to it being safe because there is not enough research, so I am hoping that someone out there has experience or has been able to find information regarding the risks of breastfeeding.

Thank you for your help.

Thank you very much for your response.  It is hard making decisions on what to do when there are not many resources out there.  I appreciate you taking the time to answer me back.

Hi,

I breastfed while I was on Remicade for about six months. My GI and Obgyn basically said the same info that has been posted. They are not sure if is passed to the baby and how much is passed. I stayed on Remicade during my pregnancy so I figured my baby had more exposure to it during the pregnancy vs. breastfeeding. He is very healthy-no problems.

I suppose every doctor is different, but my GI doc said pregnancy and breastfeeding wouldn't be a problem at all while on Remicade. He said there is some evidence of Remicade being transmitted through breastmilk, but as to whether or not the baby absorbs any...? It may just depend on your personal level of comfort, but after talking to my doctor, I don't think I would be too worried.
