Crohn's Remicaid and Pregnancy

Sat, April 18, 2009 12:00 AM

Hi everyone, I am new to the board.  I am 38 and diagnosed with UC after the birth of my son 11 years ago.  The diagnosis was changed in 2003 to Crohn's after a complete colectomy.  I now have a J pouch and am taking Remicaid. I just found out that I am pregnant.  I am looking for any support and advise as I am scared at this point.  Thanks.

I am getting really frustrated dealing with this. I had attempted surgery from the vagina area and 6 weeks after a hopeful surgery I was feeling the gas and stool pass through again! After one failed surgery my gastroenterologist recommended that I try Remicade. So after the third dose of Remicade I developed a really bad vaginal irritation that just wouldn’t heal, it latest 7 weeks (hell), when I stopped the Remicade the irritation disappeared. So, I think that is my side effect from Remicade which is unbearable. I met with another surgeon who recommended surgery from the anal side since the vaginal surgery was not successful. Today was my surgery date and I went under anesthesia and everything, I woke up thinking I had the surgery. I found out the surgeon could not find the hole, even though hours before I had surgery I had passed a lot of gas and stool through the vagina. So surgery was not done and now they think the Remicade should be done again and because it might have been slowly working. But I don't want to take Remicade again if I have to go through the side effect that I had before. My doctor had also recommended that I could try Humira if Remicade doesn't work. So after hearing your experience with Humira, I am very hopeful. I feel very alone. I cant find anyone that is going through what I am going through.

I was so desperate to find someone who is going through what I am going through.  I have had Crohn's since I was 14 and I'm 29 years old now and I have had a Rectovaginal Fistula for 5 years now and for 5 years I have had gas and stool pass from the vagina. It has been extremely hard and embarrassing to deal with. The gas passes without control and stool passes every time I use the restroom. Having a 'real' relationship with my husband has been very hard. I got pregnant 5 years ago with a lot of bleeding but had my daughter successfully. After my daughter was 12 months old, I tried to get pregnant again but kept having miscarriages after 3 months. I have had a total of three miscarriages. My gastroenterologist says its because of my crohn's. But how did I have my first? I have accepted the fact that I probably won't have any more children...

I was pregnant with my second son while receiving Remicade.   I had no problems during pregnancy and he was born right on time (unlike my first son).  I had my last Remicade infusion seven weeks before he was born as I chose to breast feed him.  No problems with him at birth or with breast feeding afterwards.  Good luck!!

I have been looking for information regarding Crohns, pregnancy and Remicade specifically and I am not finding a great deal of information.  I have read various things but would obviously confirm EVERYTHING with your GI and OBGYN.  I read somewhere that the Remicade molecule is fairly large (which is why you have to receive it via infusion instead of injection) and that it does not pass through the placenta.  There was mixed information about nursing while on Remicade.  I also read that it is supposedly fairly safe to take while pregnant.  On a remicade yahoo group a lady has two girlfriends both pregnant and on Remicade and they are doing great with no complications.  I don't know that there is much research out there studying Remicade and pregnancy on humans.  Animal research indicates that it is relatively safe.  I hope there are other people on the forum that can maybe lead you in the right direction or provide you personal experience.  Love and light, Tiffany~
