Passing UC onto Kids

Okay ... I don't know where to post this so I am choosing to post in a few different areas. I just turned 34 a few months ago and was diagnosed with UC December 2008. I am a newlywed and neither of us have children. I have done some research and it looks like there is less than 10% chance of me passing the disease onto any children I may have. Who out there has the disease and do your children have the disease too? Who out there have children with the disase and you do not have it? I realize that if I already had children it would be different. I just want to know what I am getting into since I don't have kids yet. Any input would be helpful. Thanks!!

I have UC and my paternal grandfather had it as well. I have another friend and he is the only one in his family that has UC. I don't have any children yet. I can't remember the exact percentages, but I think you are right on the 9-10% of passing it on to your kids and my GI doc said that it raises possibly to 36% (don't quote me on that number) if both parents have it. It is interesting to see how many people have it run in their families. I have always believed genes play a part, but then there are some instances where it doesn't. Interesting...

Hi, Even though there is less than a 10% chance of your children developing UC or Crohn's in my family my Great-Grandmother had UC, my grandmother had Crohn's and my father has Crohn's. I was just diagnosed with Crohn's this month. I always knew I would get Crohn's because I have had the symptoms since I was little. It could always be worse I tell myself. I often wonder why the runs so strong in my family....

Hi! I have Ulcerative Colitis and neither of my parents, or any of my relatives actually, have UC. My mother has lupus and that can be coorilated with the "inflammatory disease gene". I think that might be how I got my UC. Hope this helps!

I was diagnosed in 2007 with Ulcerative Colitis. I have 3 children ( 7, 3, 11 months ) and none have shown any symptoms. Also, I have no history of Colitis in my family.

You and I are sort of in the same boat with the adoption thing. My biological father was adopted and he passed away in 1993 so I really don't have too much of a link to his family. My mother knows some information but it is difficult because his last name was Smith (not common at all ...LOL!!!) I think I found someone in a search but it is an ex-wife of a brother and she is remarried. I don't know if she is still married. I also don't know how I would start a conversation about who I am and what I am needing. It is really tough not knowing your family background. Thanks for all the information.

I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease about a year after my first son was born in 1989. To make a long story short, I have had MANY surgeries and had a colostomy when my second child was born. So yes, you CAN have children. And NO, so far my kids don't have it. They are 20 and 14. I do have to say that I watch them like a hawk for any symptoms, but so far all is good. I do worry about my grandchildren to come, but that is out of my control. To make things a little more difficult, I am adopted and do not know my family lineage so I don't know if it runs in my family. But you know, Crohn's or UC is not the worst disease you can get in a lifetime. You have to think positive. In my case, I figure I can't have colon cancer, uterin cancer, etc. You have to always try to look on the bright side. I'm not always there, trust me, but it is my goal.
