Imuran and Pregnancy

Fri, May 29, 2009 3:48 PM

Hi everyone. My husband and I would like to have a child in the next couple of years, but I am on Humira and Imuran. My GI said being on Humira during pregnancy would be okay, but Imuran was a no-no. My OB-GYN also said Imuran was a no-no. They said the imuran could cause serious birth defects.

We will likely adopt a child, because a) I am scared to get pregnant on these medications, and b) I don't want to risk passing Crohn's on to my child.

However, I see a lot of women on this site were pregnant while taking Imuran, and I am curious about y'alls experiences! Please share your stories! Did you experience any birth defects or problems!

Hi,

My situation is similar but a little different. I have UC and I am on 6mp (which is very similiar chemical  makeup as Immuran).  I am 5 weeks pregnant and so far so good.  I won't know if the fetus has a heart beat for another few weeks. I wouldn't give up on having your own child.  I worked with a woman with Chrons who was on immuran and had a healthy baby.  Maybe you can replace the Humira with something else and stay on the immuran???? Have to ask your Doc about it.  Anyway, I am hoping for the best with my pregnancy but am aware of the risks. Will keep everyone posted.

Hi there!  You and I are in a similar boat.  I have had Crohn's for 9 years and I'm 25.  My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for almost 2 years, and no luck....during this entire time I have been on Humira.  I just found out last week from my doctor that being on Humira will lessen your ability to get pregnant!!  About a month ago, I stopped responding to Humira :(   The last medication for me to try is Cimzia, although my doc tells me that I only have a 20% chance of success, since I have stopped responding to Humira.  We are going to take a break I think on trying to get pregnant, so I can focus on getting back into remission.  We have considered adoption, mostly for fear of how my body will handle pregnancy and the aftermath.

Hello! I've had 3 kids and breastfed them all but not while taking immuran or steroids. My OB, Lactation Consultant and GI said it was unsafe. I did however,  have to stop nursing sooner than I wanted (my kids weren't happy either) in order to get back on the meds. I wish you the very BEST!

I have UC and I want to have a baby too.  I am 34 and a newlywed.  Neither of us have kids.  I have alot more complications along with the UC.  I am also on Imuran and know that I need to come off of it before getting pregnant.  I do know that Imuran is a class D drug which means high rish of defects.  I also think I saw on here that some people said the risk of defects are greater with the disease than with the medication.  It sort of sounded like they attribute it to the medication but it could be more from the disease.  I can't wait to see what kind of posts come from here on.
