weight gain

Thu, June 11, 2009 12:00 AM

hey every body, I've been diagnosed with crohn's for a little over a year, I'm a bigger girl but I've gained allot of weight. a friend of mine with crohn's told me that remicade caused weight gain in her sister and she had to go off of it. I've been on remicade for almost a year and during this time is when my weight has really gone crazy. I'm not on any steroids so its not that and i do cheat from time to time but i am careful about what i eat. since i was diagnosed i haven't had a real break in flares and my crohn's has progressed rapidly and the drs haven't been real concerned about my weight but i am. I'm  miserable and wish they could do something to help me be a little comfortable. sometimes i wonder if thats at all possible again. if any body has any ideas let me know. oh yea I'm 30 but have had a full hysterectomy because i started menopause  very early and every thing just shut down.. so im still pretty young in age just not in body..

Hi LouLou,

Boy, I now how you feel.  I have Crohns and hypothyroidism. I am on Remicaide as well.  I go for my treatments every six weeks, and every time I would go, I would be up another 5lbs.  Was getting so frustrating, but my Dr.s never said anything.  After seeing a picture my b/f took on my last birthday, I decided to join Weight Watchers.  I'm only 5'2 and looked as wide as tall.

At my first meeting I spoke with our Leader and told her I had Crohns and was concerned because you are supposed to eat lots of fruit/vege and dairy. She told me to try the best I can.  When I got my 25lb reward in January she said she remembered our first meeting of how nervous I was that the program would not work for me. To date, almost 1 year later I have lost 37lbs, it is coming off very slow, but it is working.  I eat what I can tolerate and use lactose free milk.  I feel and look so much better, and feel better about myself.

Maybe this would help you too.  You can go to Weight Watchers on line and get information.  Check with you Dr. first to see if this is something you can do.

Good luck, Karen

Hi loulou, I'm 45 and have had a complete hysterectomy in 2000. 2001 is when I was diagnosed having Crohn's Disease (IBD). Been through numerous of drugs as well as Remicade. I, too, put on about 40 pounds over the past few years. Gastroenterologist made comments about how it didn't make any sense if I had IBD. Found a woman gastroenterologist, out of town, whom has an interest in women with IBD. She explained to me that she sees weight gain in many women whom have had a complete hysterectomy. She further more explains how it sets us into early menopause and throws our hormones all out of whack and that will cause weight gain if not under controlled. So, I went to an OB/GYN and I'm now taking a custom made drug (triestrogen) to get my hormonal levels back up. Loulou, it's amazing!! Also, I learned that (for me) when I wait to eat (binge) at the end of the day; that doesn't help; weight gain wise. When I have a flare, I won't eat a thing IF I know I have to be away from home (toilet). Before I resigned from work; I wasn't eating till the evening hours. Then of course, I'm watching TV while sitting on the toilet then off to bed I go. Crazy!! Yes, it's possible to feel comfortable again... Just takes time and alot of research and staying connected with communicating with those whom can relate. Love CCFA website! Good luck to you... PS: read Hormones and Crohn's under Women's Issues.
