Just starting 6mp?????

Thu, June 25, 2009 9:26 PM

Hello-

I have had crohn's for over 11 years.  During that time I have been on pentasa.  I recently switched docs and with the tests they have recently run, the new doc found that I have 2 fistulas (one internal and one external). My new doc has tole me that he wants me to begin 6mp.  So, being married for 2 years and eventually hoping to have kids one day, has anyone been on 6mp and pregnant???? For the women who are on 6mp, what is it like? is it a scary drug to take? do u notice a difference in how you feel? any side effects??? I am 29 yrs old! Trying to get all the info i can!! Thanks :)

I am 34 y/o, diagnosed just over a year.  I have been on 6-mp & entocort for the past year with success.  However, I could not be weaned from either drug with out a relapse in symptoms.  I had a miscarriage in January and my GI doc was aware of my desire to try again.  He consulted with a Women's Health/GI specialist out of the Mayo Clinic.  They came up with the plan to continue with 6-mp and discontinue entocort, replacing it with prednisone.  I am currently 15 weeks pregnant and have only occasional mild symptoms.  OB is following my case very closely as is GI.  I will have a level 2 diagnostic ultrasound done in a few weeks to be sure all 10 fingers and toes are accounted for.  Taking any meds. while trying to become or being pregnant is always risky.  For me, my team of doctors felt this was a safe enough course to take with limited risk.  Consulting with your team of docs so everyone is on the same page is the safest way to proceed.  So far things are going well for me.  Hope the same goes for you.

Thanks Chelli for your response! I hope that you have better results with the remicade.

I took 6-mp for about 2 months but it affected my liver so I had to stop taking it.  For me, it worked about 75%.  I still had fatigue and some joint pain.  The stomach pain was only when I ate certain foods.

As far as being pregnant while taking this, all of what I read on this said that this would not be a good idea.  Maybe when the time comes, your doc can find another med for you to take during the pregnancy.

In the mean time, if you start taking it, make sure that your doc moniters your blood levels, liver enzymes, etc.  Hopefully it will work for you better than it did me.

My doc wants me to start Remicade asap.

Good luck.
