UC and menstral problems

Wed, July 15, 2009 12:00 AM

During the past year I've noticed that when my cycle is about to start my UC flares up. It is really aggravating and getting worse. Since I am done having kids I was wondering if getting a hysterectomy would help alleviate the (monthly) problem. Does anyone know if this could prove to be true? Thanks!

I've been in your shoes! A hysterectomy is extreme. A year ago, I had a procedure called "NovaSure" (Endometiral Ablation).  I am 46 years old and I have been suffering with UC for 20 years.  I noticed that my menstrual and UC had been getting worse over the years and I too thought about having a hystercotomy.  To make a long story short the surgery went well and out of the 11 months, I've had some spotting and NO cramping.  The UC flare ups have not been as severe. Discuss this procedure with your GYN (www.novasure.com)  I hope you find some relief.  Good Luck!

Hello - a hysterectomy seems kind of extreme. However I know menstrual cramps can be extremely painful. I have had dysmenorrhea for the last 20 years and was on a muscle relaxer during my period for a time. I have Crohn's and I have noticed (especially recently) that I have had a flare during menstruation for the last several months. It is terrible and hard to function - even going to the store or taking my kids to swim lessons is a gamble. I will have an urgent need to use the restroom that comes on with no warning. I experience extreme fatigue with my flares as well.
