prednisone and menstrual irregularities

Fri, July 24, 2009 3:13 PM

I just started 40 mg of prednisone this week and all of the sudden I'm menstruating when I should have been ovulating. Has this ever happened to anyone else? I can't get a hold of my doctor until monday (if I can even get a hold of him then) but don't know if this is something to expect or if it's something to be worried about...oh man I am so scared and mad and sick!

thanks for the heads up. I'm curious how pregnancy and crohn's work out? We were just starting to think about trying for our first when I was diagnosed last month. I thought prednisone made it out of the question...but maybe not? It makes me hopeful to hear that from you.

I've been of 40mg of prednisone off and on for over 2 years.  My periods are very irregular.  I'll have 2 one month and then skip it for 3.  Very hard to get pregnant when you can't perdict it!!!  Just remember it is a side effect of the drug, hang in there :)

Remember, you are putting something very foreign into your body and it is natural to react in different ways.  I started prednisone (40 mg, tapering 10 down each week)  last week and will be on it for 30 days.  I've put some weight on, (I can work to take it off), my legs, hands and feet swell at night.  My cycle also just started and it's one of those why bothers.

I'm not alarmed.  It's natural.  Let your mind, body and spirit relax, dear.  I know it's scary, but I promise it will work out.  The more you fret and worry, the more you are hurting your intestinal tract.  Take some deep breaths, relax and work through the pain when it comes.  We will get control of our body back, in time.  Totally sucks being in this condition, but there are lessons for all of us to learn and we will eventually.

Hang in there.  You'll be up and about and your ol' self soon.
