Weight Loss during pregnancy

Wed, August 19, 2009 6:26 PM

Hello! I was wondering if anyone with Crohns who has been through a pregnancy has any advice for me. I am almost through my first trimester, and am in remission. So far so good... but i have been steadily loosing weight, and I expected to be gaining by now. I have lost about 10lbs so far, and i am concerned that it may be related to the crohns. If anyone has any thoughts, i would appreciate them. My iron levels plummeted similar to my first flare up also. I am hoping that i am not about to flare!

I have UC and with my pregnancy I lost weight during the first three months also.  In the end I gained a total of 15 pounds.  I was lucky to have no flare up during my pregnancy.   I was considered more of a high risk because of to UC.  My doctor did not seem concerend with my weight loss in the beginning because with each check up he kept telling me that the baby was growing.  Good luck with your pregnancy!

Thank you for your reply. I am now 14 weeks and still have not gained anything, but i have stopped loosing weight, which is a relief. For some reason, my Doctor's don't seem to be the least bit concerned that i have crohn's, so i am not high risk, but am thankfully holding onto my remission so far.

I have three children, and was diagonsed with UC a year before I became pregnant with my 3rd.  I only gained 20lbs with my first two, and with my third ( I flared most of the pregnancy ) I only gained 15lbs.  I was a healthy weight before getting pregnant with all three.  That said, I put on the majority of the weight in my 8th month, so I wouldn't worry.  My OB followed me very closely with my 3rd and I had several ultrasounds to make sure the baby was growing okay.  He was born 3 weeks early ( my water broke ) and weighed just over 7lbs.  I was considered high risk because of my UC, I assume you may be too.  Also, I stayed on Pentasa throughout my pregancy, although I still flared up.  Good Luck, I know it's hard not to worry.
