Pregnancy and UC

Thu, September 17, 2009 4:33 PM

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum. I just have a question and was wondering if anyone has ever been there. My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for the past 4 years now with no luck. The first 2 years my disease was very bad and since then i have had some flare-ups. I am starting to lose hope and was hoping to hear some positive stories...:-)

Thanks

I have UC and I had trouble getting pregnant which included one miscarriage , but I ended up having to take clomid-for infertility-it's a pill, and had IUI (intrauterine insemination), it was all successful-I now have a wonderful 9 month old son.  I did start into a flare about 3 months after delivery-that I'm still battling, but I went into complete remission during my pregnancy and really enjoyed my pregnancy.  I had a uncomplicated vaginal delivery.  Good luck, maybe seek the advice and help of an infertility specialist-I know how heartbreaking this road can be-stay positive and determined!!!

I went to the doctor on Friday and my OBGYN stated that it would be best to have a C-section than vaginal delivery due to people with UC and Crohn's having rectum issues and our rectum would tear easier.  He said it's best to recover from the stomach versus the buttox.  Ladies with UC and Crohn's do you believe it's best to have a C-Section?  The doctors only know so much, but hearing from someone that has experience this would really help.

My advice for further down the road is this.  When you do get pregnant, carefully consider C section vs vaginal delivery.  If you may possibly ever need an ileoanal pullthrough, you will be happier if you had a C section to deliver your child/children.

According to my surgeon, nearly all women who delivered vaginally and have ileoanal pullthroughs will experience anal leakage.

Maybe you will never have an ileoanal pullthrough, but just in case....delivery options are something to consider.

Best wishes,

Angie

Roxanne-

From what I have read it is very important to be well when you get pregnant.  Apparently women who are flaring when they get pregnant are more likely to flare during the pregnancy, and women who are in remission are more likely to stay in remission.

Good luck!

I have also tried to get pregnant for  a few years also . I have Crohns and talked to my docs about getting pregnant and I made the disesion not to have any more children due to this disease. I also talked to woman that where pregnant that have Crohns and it was hard for them . But I would talk to your Gnyo and other docs about it to review your options.  It depends on how bad your disease is .
