20 weeks pregnant with a flare

Sun, October 18, 2009 12:51 PM

After over 5 weeks of a bad flare, I seem to finally found some improvement in my condition. My pain is more tolerable now, still bloody stools but with less bowel movements a day. So I feel less tired. My baby is doing great and fortunately I am only takin mesalazine (6 supositories, 6 pills a day). I can eat more things and I finally feel the baby move, with my hand on my belly cause I don´t feel the movement inside, probably because of the distended colon. I think my baby and I are getting through this.

My dr. warned me about the possibility of the baby to be a preemie, so we are getting ready for the arrival, at 40 or less weeks, as long as the baby is fine.

It has been hard but worth it.

Hi ladies,
I was diagnosed with Crohn's when I was 19 years old and I had my first child when I was 21 my last child when I was 30.   Seems like it's best to have your kids when you are the healthiest.  I have a hard time staying away from my favorite bad foods too.  It is really a challenge.
I don't think there are any rules at having healthy children when you have IBD.  I think the key is avoid stress and eat right.  Try to stay away from prednisone if you can.   Hope this helps!  Good Luck!

Hi durango18. I AM still flaring, but the pain is less, and evacuations are less than 10 now, so it is improving. I am taking mesalazine. I do take folic acid and iron supplements and a multivitamin. We still don´t know weather if it is a boy or a girl...I want to know so bad...

if you are trying to conceive you have to get your obgyn and GI to advice you prior to it. We (my husband and I) planned this baby for months before getting pregnant. Specially since I used to take 6MP and I didn´t want to risk the baby with all the meds.

Thank God, I got on remission for over a year and finally I concieved in june. Baby is 20 weeks now, I am flaring, but it is getting under control.

As Vaudry adviced us, I eat well, small amounts 5 times a day, trying to stay healthy.

My advice, get your drs. to advice you, get in remission and prepare because there is no guarantee that your UC will stay in remission throughout the 9 months.

We have a 11 year old girl, and we had to wait a LOT to get pregnant again...just reach for the best time for the baby and for your gut.

Vaudry,

Did you have Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn's when you conceived any of your children?  If yes, did you experience a difficult pregnancy?  I am in the process of trying to conceive and I really want to stop taking my meds (Lialda) because I'm scared of what it might do to the baby-but most of the doctors are telling me to keep taking the medicine to remain in remission.  I see you mentioned that we should eat healthy, I am truly having a hard time doing so since I love my "bad" foods.  Is there any info you could share with me on things to eat and not to eat while being pregnant with ulcerative colitis?

Dear Amidala and Durango18,
I have had four pregnancies and live births.  All of my babies were slightly premature.  3-6 weeks early but healthy for the most part.  Now I realize why I was so anxious to give birth, the pressure on my intestines was painful toward the end!!  The two that I had taken Prednisone with seemed to have slight problems.  Both of these children were colicky, one had GERD.  Both have voices that carry and strong lungs!  LOL!  My advice to you is to EAT WELL, take your vitamins if you can stomach them (they made me very nausiated).  Try not to stress about the unimportant stuff and get rest when you can.  Good luck!  And congratulations.  ;~)

Amidala,

Are you taking folic acid in addition to your medicine for UC?  I have met with a few GI's and OBGYN's-I thought people with UC would be considered as high risk but everyone is treating it as a normal person-do you have a high risk doctor?  Do you have to see your GI and OBGYN on a regular or just your OB/GYN?

Hey,

I'm so happy to hear that you are not flaring.  It has to be scary when you are pregnant and see blood and mucus in the stool.  With us having UC is that common?  Overall, how have you been feeling?  Are you having a boy or girl? Are you still taking your meds?  I know I'm asking alot of questions, but my husband and I have came to the decisions that we will try to start conceiving in November-is there any advice you can give to me while we are in the preparation stage?
