UC, PEs, and want a baby

Wed, November 25, 2009 8:20 AM

Okay ... so here's my abbreviated story.  I got diagnosed with UC almost a year ago.  I am 34 and just got my 2nd pulmonary embolism (PE -- blood clot in my lung) due to the UC.  I was told by my doctor that he thinks the clots are forming in my lungs instead of traveling from my legs like most PEs.  I have to stay on blood thinners the rest of my life.  My dilemma is that I don't have kids and I really wanted to have one.  I have done alot of research on the internet and the risk of clots increases with pregnancy.  Is there anyone else out there that has dealt with this?  I know I need to go talk to an OB/Gyn but I just wanted to hear other stories too.

Hi, I think that with heparin you can control your clots during pregnancy, but definitely you have to talk to  a high risk OBGYN. I can only tell you that with UC, pregnancy is consider high risk and you have to take into consideration the posible complications, the risk of premature delivery, the risk of a flare, etc.

It is posible to do it, and the best time to get pregnant is during remision, although is no garantee. I talked to both my GI and OBGYN for a year prior to concieving. I am 25 weeks pregnant and have been on a flare since week 14. I don´t have your PE problem ad it has been tough, just with asthma and UC. So you have to be prepared, listen to your doctors and hope for the best.
