BenzaClin & Colitis

Fri, December 18, 2009 1:00 AM

With any information found about the acne cream BenzaClin, it states to avoid if you have a history of colitis.  I know that this is because of the Clindamycin in it, however, it seems that very little would actually be absorbed systemically for it to affect the colitis.  Has anyone here had any experience with this?  I have an appt with my GI next week and will ask her then also...

oh geez--i just noticed ZIANA has clindamyacin in it!  maybe it is a lower dose...all I remember is years ago I used a clindamyacin towelette product and it made me very ill in the way of GI symptoms.  but that was something I would wipe all over my face and it was probably more concentrated than ziana or benzaclyn.  I hope this helps

Hi

I do not have UC or Crohn's but I have used products with clindamyacin and developed GI symptoms!  Once I stopped, the cramping & diarrhea stopped too.

That said, I have also used Benzaclyn and did not find it to really help my acne.  I started using a product called ZIANA and my skin has cleared up immensely!  You have to use it every day and it can be drying but once your skin gets used to it the dryness should ease up.

Good luck to you!

My 19 year old daughter was diagnosed with UC 3 years ago.  She had been taking acne meds (Menecylne and Amoxicillion...spelling??) for almost 3 years.  As soon as she stopped, she developed UC.  She had also been on Benzeclin, Differin too.  Her IBD specialist said it's ok if she went on the strongest topical meds for her acne.  (I read the same thing as you about UC and the topicals for acne).  She is currently on Differin 3% for her acne plus she had been going for light chemical peels.  All that helped her and I wish she was never on the "pills" for her acne.  She is also on Azathiorprine and Lialda, Women's One a Day, Oscal and Ultimate Flora Critical Care 50 Billion (probiotic).
