Getting Pregnant - Humira or Cimzia???

Mon, February 08, 2010 2:13 PM

Hello all!  I have been on Remicade for two years and had discussed getting pregnant on Remicade with my doctors (GI and OBBYN).  We developed a plan of action.  Well I am not pregnant yet, but now I am gettting off the Remicade due to some delayed allergic reaction.  My GI doctor wants to proceed with Cimzia (he also mentioned Humira possibly, but decided on Cimzia).  I was wondering if anyone had gotten pregnant while using Cimzia or Humira and if anyone would reccommend one over the other.  They are both category B, as was Remicade.  I have a call into my OBGYN also, but would love to hear some feedback if anyone has any.

Thanks in advance!!

Hello there!  I am 6 weeks pregnant and I am on Cimzia I have been for almost a year.  I got married in Nov 09 and new that I wanted to get pregnant shortly after.  I was on Methotrexate and obviously you cannot get pregnant on that and although it was working I insisted that my medication be switched.  It may have been helping me physically but it sure wasn't mentally.  So I asked my doctor if I had to be on Meds at all and he said that if I get a flare while pregnant it could be very bad for both myself and the baby.  I had a choice of Remicade, Humira, and Cimzia.  I was told that while Remicade and Humira can possibly pass through the placenta late in pregnancy Cimzia is not believed to cross the placenta ever.  No studies have been done in pregnant women only in animals whichtroubles me a bit but I was assured that other patients have had healthy babies on Cimzia as well as the others.  When I found out I was pregnant I immediately called my doctor and I was assured again that everything would be OK.  The only thing that upsets me is that I won't be able to breastfeed since it is not known if it passes through the breast milk.  I wish I did not have to take anything.  So although none of us women with Crohns are ever going to feel comfortable being on meds while pregnant it's something that we have to accept and trust our doctors.  Good luck to you!
