Problems getting pregnant??

Tue, May 04, 2010 12:00 AM

Hello,

Here's my question. Has anyone had any problems trying to get pregnant & found any helpful solutions?

My Story:

I was 21 when I gave birth to my son and I'm now 31. After I'd given birth, I began to have many complications and about 6 months later was diagnosed with Chohn's. Hospitalized on many occasions until 2005 when I had a section of my small bowel removed. In 2006, got pregnant, then miscarried. Tried, tried, & tried, and I finally got pregnant again in 2009 after stopping fertility medications. Miscarried again. Now 1 year later, we're back to fertility meds and just had an IUI done 3 weeks ago. I'm praying that it worked, but if not I'm going to be so disappointed. Currently the only Crohn's meds I'm on is Imuran. It's so so so frustrating. I sometimes fell like I'm letting my husband down. I never realized that trying to pregnant was such an emotional roller coaster. We have strong faith and know that God will provide & have our church backing us. But it's really nice to hear from those who walk in the same shoes, who's been there, and can understand where I'm coming from.

Thanks for taking the time to read/respond.

God Bless!

I was diagnosed with Crohn's six years ago, and my husband and I just started trying.  I would highly highly recommend that you go see your gastroenterologist and ob/gyn and let them know that you're planning on trying to get pregnant.  I went in about a year ago (although we only recently started trying).  My ob/gyn didn't really know a lot about Crohn's, but my gastroenterologist was able to discuss my options as far as medicine.  I was on Imuran at the time, but she said that it could be dangerous to the fetus, so I was able to stop.  Your medications might be contributing to your difficulty, and it's definitely something to talk to your doctors about before you get pregnant.  Good luck!

Right there with you.  I was diagnosed with UC in 2000 - no one in my family has it that we know of, but my mother-in-law and her father have/had UC and my sister-in-law and her father have/had Crohns - my hubby exhibits NO symptoms.  Given his family history, we discussed the odds of our child having either UC or Crohns with my gastro doc - with all the factors, it came in around 33%, which we felt was acceptable.  Even if we adopted a child, there was the risk that they could have some health issue.

We didn't technically start seriously trying (no temperature taking, etc), but we definitely didn't prevent for two years.  We always had adoption in the back of our minds as an option, so after we hit the two year mark, we started looking into it.  I found out on Mothers Day 2001 that I was pregnant - she's a happy, healthy 8-year-old today.  We haven't been able to have another, but thats ok.  Shes our miracle.  And if we definitely want another, there's still always adoption.  :)

My sister-in-law was diagnosed with Crohns when she was 8.  Due to ovarian cysts - a risk with Crohns - she is down to 1/2 of 1 ovary, so her likelihood of getting pregnant is low and really not advisable anyway.  She and her husband adopted 3 wonderful girls through the foster system a few years ago.

Good luck!

I can definitely relate and have walked in your shoes, just a little differently.   My husband and I held off to have children for 5 yrs after we were married.   We got pregnant with our first daughter with no problem at all (almost immediately).    After two years we started to try to make her a big sister and found it terribly frustrating.   For some reason it simply wasn't happening.   The disappointment month after month was just devastating.   I have a strong faith and believe God is in charge, not me.   We finally simply stopped "trying".  Though difficult to do, it was much better for us as a family, I had become obsessed (really not healthy).   After two years, we were pleasantly surprised with yet another blessing, another baby girl.   It wasn't until 9 years later that I was diagnosed with CD.   My youngest daughter had been diagnosed at 4.   Was CD the cause of the infertility??   Maybe.

I wish you and your family the very best.
