Meds and Prenatal vitamins

Fri, July 02, 2010 8:49 PM

Recently diagnosed with early stages of Crohn's Colitis, and put on Pentasa (8 pills a day). I want to start trying to get pregnant, but concerned because prenatal vitamin states to ask doctor before taking if diagnosed with crohn's. Anyone have any advice on pentasa and prenatals?

Thanks to everyone who responded! I talked to my doc, and he said the same things you all said :-)

I was on imuran, but due to us trying to get pregnant, my doc has also placed me back on Pentasa (8 pills a day). It is perfectly ok to take prenatial's while on Pentasa. I do not take the prescription due to it makes me sick. I take a brand called Finest which can be found at Walgreen's. I have been on these for over a year and they have never made me sick. It's also important that you have a snack/meal when taking them. This helps reduce the upset feeling in your stomach.

Good Luck :-)

Definitely talk with your doc before sooner rather than later.  I couldn't tolerate the prenatal vitamins, they made me sick to my stomach.  My doctor recommended Flinstones, they were great.   The folic acid is what is very important for the baby's development.

Good luck.

Pentasa isn't VERY harmful to a fetus, I am on Pentasa as well. But you should check with your doctor before you try to get pregnant. I had this problem. You could risk your life and the life of your child, depending on your condition. Check with a doctor first. BEST OF LUCK!!! I'll pray for ya!
