Humira/ 6MP effects on sperm and and pregnancy

Tue, January 04, 2011 10:21 PM

Hi,
Just hoping if anyone can help with this.
My husband has been on 6MP for years now and has just started Humira two weeks ago after things have been getting bad for a while (partial obstruction and lots of pain). Our doctor intends to slowly stop the 6mp in the next three month and keep going with the humira for as long as it will work (and we pray it will work).

We are very much wanting to get pregnant soon but worry-
should we wait until the 6mp gets out of his system or until more Humira come in? which is worse for pregnancy?
I hear both affect the sperm count but not sure which one is worse for that or for the baby's health.
Does anyone have children after being on Humira or 6mp?
would be most thankful for any information.

wife to a 33 y/o sweet man with crohn's diagnosed 20 years ago. been on everything+several operations. currently on Humira and 6mp

happy and healthy new year!

Hi,

Thanks for your post- Sorry you are having a flare up- I know how hard they can be. Ive gathered a lot of information on this in the past few weeks and it seems as even though it is better to not get pregnant on 6MP, it is worse for the baby for you to get pregnant when you are sick.
I have been researching the male side of this but it seems as though 6MP is not great for pregnancy but most chances are your baby will be just fine.
I just called the NY State Teratology Information Service this week and they were amazing-
1-800-724-2454
they gave me a real overview on the affect of 6MP/humira on pregnancy and advice on what to do and how to plan ahead with this. This really gave me peace of mind. Call them!
I hope you will feel much better soon. Humira has made a huge change in our lives- you might want to give it some thought. Feel Better. Im sure you will have a wonderful healthy baby soon!

Hi! Well I have been on Humira for a couple years, and actually started back on 6mp today :( I am a female who has had Crohn's for 18 yrs. My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for a few months and now our plans are going to be put on hold for awhile since I'm having a flare-up...anyway a friend at work (who's husband has Crohn's)- he was on 6mp and when they wanted to get pregnant his doctor said he needed to go off of the 6mp...I think that is what he did & now they have a healthy little girl! Hope that helps a little...I'm just hoping to go off the 6mp soon so I can start trying again! Good luck to you guys!!
