Remicade & Pregnancy

Mon, February 07, 2011 9:44 PM

Has anyone had any experience with being pregnant and on Remicade. I just found out that I'm 7 weeks along and my next infusion is in three weeks. I've only been on Remicade for about 6 months and it has worked wonders. But now that I'm pregnant, I'm worried that it might hurt the baby. I have an appt set up with my obgyn and gi doc to let them decide since they are the experts. But I was just wondering if anyone has been on Remicade during the pregnancy and if so did the baby have any complications after birth.

Thanx!

Late reply, but I was on put on Remicade for the 1st time while I was 10 weeks prego. I was in the hospital for being very underweight, dehydrated-so sick! My GI gave me my last dose at 27 weeks pregnant (I've read some dr's say it's ok for entire pregnancy though). My daughter was born very healthy, but I had an emergency C-Section 2 weeks before due date. Her umbilical cord was very thin and seemed like if she rested on it her heart beat would drop suddenly, but always came back up. OB wanted to be on the safe side and get her out:) Don't know if the Remicade had anything to due w/ that, but she is 4mths and healthy:)

It's so hard when your pregnant, but if you are too sick that could be really bad for the baby too. Do your own research (not just what your GI says) and your new mommy instinct will help you make the best decision for you guys. Take care:)

I hope your pregnancy is going well so far. I was recently on Remicade and pregnant. I did not have any problems during the pregnancy and delivered a very healthy little boy last June. I watched the podcast "IBD and She" it was very helpful and had some good points. Because the baby will get some of the remicade, they advised not giving your baby any live vaccinations (just like you should avoid) until 6 months after birth, they also said they advised patients to try to put as much time between their last infusion and the delivery as possible. I was unable to do that and had an infusion two weeks before he was born. I would advise watching the podcast, it is on the ccfa website for viewing anytime. The only vaccination that was live with our son was the Rotavirus, we just skipped it. I think that it is very important to stay on your medication during the pregnancy, Remicade is a class B med, pretty safe. I had a few flares even while on the Remicade during the pregnancy but was able to manage them with my diet, I also had a pretty bad flare a week after he was born. Just something to keep in mind, I was told because your body goes through so much stress during delivery, you're more likely to flare. Hang in there and I hope your pregnancy goes well. My daughter was on Remicaide when she found out she was 3 months pregnant.  Her doc advised that it was better to stay on it  - she needed to stay healthy and the Remicaid helped her.  We were originally scared to death because we didn't know what effects it would have on the baby.  My daughter was the healthiest when she was pregnant and my granddaughter is a completely healthy soon to be 4 yr old.  The main worry was the baby's immune system and would immunizations and things take.  We have had absolutely no ill effects whatsoever.  I would worry more about steriods if you had to be on them.  My daughter would go into allergic reactions to the Remicaide and would need steriods before & after her treatments which can cause cleft palate, but we did not have any side effects with the baby at all.  Sit back - stay on your Remicaide and enjoy your pregnancy.  Good Luck - My daughter also felt the healthiest during her entire pregnancy.  Hope you do too.
