Crohn's and infertility

Fri, April 22, 2011 2:23 PM

I have had Crohn's for about 7 years.  I am 36.  I married my husband 4 years ago and we have been trying to conceive ever since.  I got pregnant right away 4 years ago, but miscarried at 10 weeks.  I was in remission for awhile, but just found that I have active disease.  I want to continue trying for a baby as I am not getting any younger, but I don't want to be on Humira while trying.  Any advice?????

I just wanted to post that I have been on Imuran (50 mg/day) for 5 years for UC.  It is the only medicine that has put me and kept me in remission.  I am currently 5 months pregnant w/ a very healthy baby girl.  Don't read half of the stuff on the internet about imuran and pregnancy b/c it will only scare you.  I am closely monitored w/ ultrasounds every 4 weeks, but it is better for you and the baby to stay on your medication while you are pregnant than to have a flare.  Make sure you take folic acid everyday even before you get pregnant.  Good luck : )

Sorry this is such a late response.  I was just put back on Remicade and did some pretty intense research.  From what I was able to conclude-with internet and speaking to my Remicade nurse-there have been several healthy pregnancy while on Remicade.  However, these drugs (Remicade, Humira, Cimzia) have not been out long enough for any long term studies to be done.  One site suggested being off the biologic for 2 yrs-before conception, during and while breastfeeding.  I feel it is now a personal decision whether you want to be on these meds and be pregnant..  Most women experience a flare during pregnancy so Humira would help with your symptoms.  I have decided that while using these meds I am going to hold off on trying to start a family-only because I want to make sure I give my child every oppurtunity to be healthy and without extensive research on these drugs I am not sure it I could.  Humira has not even been tested in humans that are pregnant!!  Take to multiple OB/GYN's and GI docs.  Try to see if there is a high risk OB in your area that can monitor you or give you advice.  I hope everything works out and that you are able to complete your family!

I am in a similar situation. I have researched and researched Humira. I saw an interesting video online from a doctor that specializes in IBD and also specializes in woman and pregancy. She said it is safe to be on Humira and get pregnant. Also it isnt passed in breast milk. I have also discussed this with the best OBGYN / peditrician in my area and he said Humira is ok . I am also on Imuran as well and he said not to be on that one if i was wanting to get pregnant. Anways, i can send you the link if you want and my info.

I obvioulsy wish i could be on no meds but the Humira is really helping me and i feel great. (P.S. I am sure someone will post about the SCD diet and all that .........tried it ......didnt work for me....)
