Best Antibotics/Pain Medications for Delivery

Mon, June 27, 2011 5:53 PM

I am about to give birth to my first baby girl in a few weeks.  My UC has been in remission the entire pregnancy.  However, I am worried that I will have a flare as a result from the antibiotics and/or the pain meds used during delivery.  Does anyone know which antibotics/pain meds are less likely to induce a flare?  Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Congratualtions!!!!!  I can understand your concern.  My daughter has UC diagnosed 4 years ago (at 16).  She is currently taking 4 Lialda's per day, 2 probiotics Ultimate Flora Critical Care, 1 Women's One a Day, 1 Oscal and also one cranberry supplement also watches her diet to stay away from anything that will cause bacteria overgrowth like added sugars, junk foods, processed foods.  She sees an IBD specialist in Los Angeles.  Before this one she went to a pediatric IBD specialist.  I had the same concerns about anti biotics (my daughter was on antibiotics for 3 years for her acne and when she stopped them, she developed UC).  She said the antibiotics to take for UC patients are:  Z-pack or Bactrim.  Stay away from Augmentin and Amoxicillian which cause GI problems.  (One of my daughters acne meds was amoxicillian!!!!)  Also I'm sure you already know to only take Tynenol.  Stay away from Motrin and Advil which can cause GI problelms.

My best advice is to try to stop stressing about it.   Unfortunately stress sometimes wrecks our guts.   Leave the drug choices up to your doc and embrace your new little miracle.

All the best.
