trying to get pregnant when i have crohns disease/medication during pregnancy

Fri, August 19, 2011 7:49 PM

I was diagnosed with crohns disease in march of 2009.. and i am 35 years old. We have been trying for the last 6 months to get pregnant but its not working. i am kind of scared because i am taking 100 mg of azathriopine a day and wondering how it could affect the baby. Im still getting familiar and facing the facts that i have this disease...is there anyone else out there that has taken this drug while trying to get pregnant or is pregnant. My last gastroentologist would talk to me like i shouldnt have kids and tells me i shouldnt be mad about having the disease and should basically get over it because i do have the disease...is it wrong for me to feel mad...any replys would be greatly appeciated.

thanks

Many women (myself included!) have successfully gotten pregnant with Crohns. You should definitely just keep in close contact with your doctor about the medications you're on, but in general, I wouldn't worry too much! A lot of doctors also agree that pregnancy is completely fine, for the most part: https://www.healthtap.com/user_questions/65254-is-it-ok-to-have-a-baby-since-i-have-crohns

I was on that drug for years (9) and it was not doing me much good. After some of my small intestine removed and 2 miscarriages, doctors did not believe that i would ever be able to get pregnant. We went to every specialist to help us get pregnant and it still wasn't working. Finally in the fall of 2010 my doc put me on remicade. It worked wonders and for once I felt back in control of my life. After being on remicade a little under year, we found out we were pregnant. The remicade really helped to heal and bring me into remission. Of course i stopped all remicade treatments during pregnancy and just had a healthy baby 4 months ago. I had no issues during the pregnancy and carried full term. The best advise that i can give is to pray, and go with your heart. Everyone except me believed that i could never have a baby. It was hard trying for 7 years and i was so frustrated with the docs. Once I finally found an OBGYN & GI doc who supported me, it made me more comfortable with the choices of meds to be taking. Good Luck to you! Keep the faith!

I was on 75 mg of Aza and Prednisone when I got pregnant with twins.  The maternal fetal medicine (MFM) specialist and genetic counselor we went to said the biggest concern with the medications is a cleft lip/palate.  I continued to see the MFM throughout the pregnancy and had frequent ultrasounds, but both boys grew healthy with no issues at all.  I delivered at 32 weeks with both boys weighing over 5lbs (twins frequently are born early, but not often weighing 5lbs at 32 wks!).  They are now 8 years old and healthy.  We did not go through infertility treatments.  I did chart my basal temperature every morning though to try and make things move along a little quicker.  Good luck!  And if you have questions I'd be happy to talk to you more!

Hi all! I'm also trying to conceive, it's only been 2 months. I was diagnosed with Crohn's 5 years ago and am currently on Humira.  Anyone have any advice?

I have tried many of the "natural" diet and lifestyle changes extremely strictly and had no change in my disease. I finally went on azathiroprene and humira and have been for the last year. I am officially in remission and have no active disease.
I am considering getting pregnant or to start trying. I have alot of very current research on these topics and lots of info about the meds and pregnancy. I also have been in contact with a company in california that is running studies on pregnancy and medications. (not associated with drug companies etc). So their research isnt for profit. If anyone wants this info or the contact info you can email me.

I dont want to post it all on here b/c it takes to long and some people have very strong views against medications all together.(we all know who I am talking about lol....and its not a woman so I wonder sometimes why they are posting about woman issues in the "woman section of this forum").

I have weighed my options very closely about being on medications or not while pregnant and at some point we just have to put things in gods hands and just hope for the best b/c there are no promises in any pregnanies regardless of medications.

Hello Orchid,

My gi doctor told me not to take the azathriopine while pregnant or trying to get pregnant.... Some doctors will tell you that its okay to take it while your pregnant or trying... But they are wrong because there has not been alot of research done on it.There are safer medications that they make out there that will help you. .I have been off the medication for a month now and i feel better without  it then when i was taking it....no luck on getting pregnant yet but just got to keep on trying. I hope that you have suceess in trying to get pregnant also. please contact me again if you have anymore questions.

I currently take azathioprine 50 mg/day along with Remicade every 8 weeks. My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for about 10 months without luck. I know the GI docs say it's crucial to remain on all meds before/during/after pregnancy, but being on the azathioprine worries me (it's a class D). How have things been going for you? Any advice for getting pregnant?
