Thanks everyone for the replys....i emailed my gi doctor and talked to her and got some more information...she said you should not take azathioprine while trying to get pregnant or are pregnant or nursing. She also said mesalamine is not proven to be safe during pregnancy...but some doctors feel like it is safe and will prescribe it.

I would act with extreme caution.  The unknowns are just too plentiful with this one, though I am an extremely conservative mom.   Your question leads me to thinking that maybe doctors should have the discussion with patients of child bearing years BEFORE beginning treatment.   This way if a patient wants to have a baby they would know all of their risks upfront and perhaps have an option of egg retrieval prior to beginning treatment?   Maybe even using the meds to obtain remission, waiting a few months for the meds to rid themselves from your system then trying?   Whatever you decide, good luck.

MAKE SURE  your OB is 100% okay with it. From my conversations with various GI doctors, and from being a nurse, I really don't think that most of them give a rats butt about the health of your baby. Get your OB and GI to communicate, or if need be get second or third or fourth opinions from docs who will work together and find an appropriate solution.

I'm on azathioprine (75mg/day) and asked my GI about it, who said that it's actually looking like it may be okay to go through pregnancy with azathioprine. I'd suggest asking a GI about what the current research shows, since it may be okay but they may know additional safety measures to take.
