miscarriage part 2

Tue, November 01, 2011 7:13 PM

When I discovered I was 4 weeks pregnant I continued to have mild to moderate IBD symptoms, but wanted to follow in the paths of the other pregnancies. Based on my past, even with active disease, I've been able to grow healthy, full term babies.  Well, miscarriage symptoms started last week so I went in for an ultrasound and saw the baby and the heartbeat. That was comforting, but the baby was measuring two weeks small. Sadly, last night the baby passed and I went into the doctor today and we found nothing left in my uterus.  This is my first miscarriage. My doctor is confident that I'll be able to carry another child.  He is a high risk OB/GYN and very good.  He says that I met the statistics (1 in 3 pregnancies ending in miscarriage) so I should consider myself normal.  That it was probably just a chromosome abnormality. He also said as long as I'm not really having symptoms it would be best if I could stay off meds (Pentasa is what I'll try when I go on something) for another year or so.  I do have symptoms though, I just don't think they're that bad.  My GI doctor has a different opinion though.  He says that the chances of miscarriage are elevated with women who have any form of IBD compared with women who do not.  I think he's going to say I need to be on treatment, but I will find out for sure when I talk to him next week.  So I'm concerned that it may be my moderate flare that caused this pregnancy to end and that I should start treatment to prevent it from happening the next time.  On the other hand I would like to have a med free pregnancy, because they have not done extensive testing on the unborn child and these drugs.  I'm being torn both ways. So for anyone who's reading, I would so appreciate any stories you have, good or bad, with your pregnancies and the outcomes, whether on treatments or not.  Thanks so much for reading! Im really hoping to get lots of feedback.

I am sorry for your loss. I don't know how to comfort you during this time, but please know that I am sorry.  I am contemplating getting pregnant with my first soon, but I am afraid of miscarriage as well. I have Crohn's, and  I have very short periods of remission.

The OBGYN told me that during times of flares, the body will miscarry the baby because it's attacking itself. It's best to get pregnant when you are in a stable period so make sure to get the flares to a minimum. Now, as far as I know, you can take some steroids during pregnancy. I'm on Remicade, and that one is iffy. Currently, my OBGYN and my GI docs are talking about what regiment would be safe for me during pregnancy.  Maybe your doc may want to move you up from ASAs to something a little bit stronger to get you into remission and then you can try again?  I hope helped and let us know how you are doing.
