Sex with Crohn's

Sat, March 10, 2012 9:31 PM

I'm a young adult who recently realized that the level of pain I experience during sexual intercourse is abnormal. I wanted to look up if it might be related to Crohn's, but I didn't find a ton of information on a google search. it seems to be that pain is common for females with Crohn's, but I'd really appreciate hearing some stories of other people's experience with it. Does Crohn's affect your sex life? What type f pain may be associated with it? What ways have you found of coping with it?

All the best,
Kelly

Hello!

The only time I have had pain during sex is when I am feeling bloated also or am just having general pain due to my Crohn's.  I have a peri-anal fistula and when that is infected I feel slight pain also.

Definitely get checked to see if you have a vaginal fistula.  They can be very dangerous if left untreated.  My fistula had formed an abscess and I didn't know what it was.  When I went to the doctor's, my doctor was on vacation and I saw one of his partners.  He saw my hemrhoids an assumed that was what I was talking about.  That night the abscess burst and if I hadn't gone to the hospital I would have died.  I lost a lot of blood.  Please get checked as soon as possible just to be sure this isn't what you have.

Another possibility is a vaginal infection.  If you are immune suppressive drugs it is much easier to get an infection.  Either way definitely go to your GI doc or gyno.  Good luck I hope you feel better!

I am on the older end now, but I do know that there were several different issues with pain throughout the years.  One thing you may check out is if you are dehydrated.  Believe it or not, I found that when I was more dehydrated, there seemed to be more pain issues.
If you have fistulizing Crohns, watch for vaginal fistulas.  I have not had one there, but I have had them elsewhere.  I always make sure my GYN is aware to examine for that.
Mostly, I found the pain to be from the bloat and inflammation during mini or full flares.  I also was ultra conscious of gas and potential BM with "exertion".  The gas is still there, but the other worry is gone thanks to a med.  Frankly, since I found my husband who really is supportive...those awkward things aren't awkward and that took pain away too.
Hope this helps!

Crohns definitely affects your sex life if you are having pain, bloating, or overall just feel gross.  I'd definitely go see your OBGYN, and talk to them about that though.  You didn't describe where your pain is.  If it's in the vaginal area, I'd doubt seriously that that was Crohn's related.  Sometimes if I'm really bloated, and possibly gassy, the pressure of sex can hurt....don't know if this helps.
