Crohn's & Breast Cancer -- Possible to Treat Both?

Wed, May 09, 2012 1:32 PM

Hello fello Crohnies,

I was removed from my Crohn's meds (Imuran/Humira) to go through a year of cancer treatment for Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC) and my GI feels quite comfortable placing me back on those meds once my cancer treatment is over which is now looming.

However, my instinct is screaming at me not to go back on them -- that anything shutting off my immune systems is dangerous especially having the most invasive and aggressive of all breast cancers at Stage IIIC with a very high recurrence rate.  My instinct also tells me that Humira may have played a role in my cancer as it is documented that it does jack up the probability of breast cancer 2-3 x the normal rate.

I also need to mention that my Crohn's is flaring so it does need to be addressed.

Anyone out there have both?  If so, how are you keeping both your Crohn's and cancer in remission?  Or is it a matter of which one gets me first?

Thanks!

I'm sorry I'm not going to be too much of a help, but I noticed you mention that your GI doctor is fine with putting you back on the meds. What does your doc who's treating your cancer think? I would definitely ask them because they might see it from a different way. I am very happy that you are in remission!!! I hope that you continue to get better!
