Pregnancy, Remicade and Flareups

Sat, August 18, 2012 7:24 PM

I am 30 weeks pregnant with my second child. My first was born while I was on both Remicade and Pentasa, I have continued both medications through this pregnancy as well. I just wanted to post a little note and maybe get some feed back from you. I was told to stop my Remicade at 30 weeks and then proceed with them after the baby was born. I am nervous because my first pregnancy, I did not stop my treatments. This time around I am having a little more pain and the thought of being 4+ weeks without anything scares me. This time around I have someone else to take care of that requires a lot of going, my son is very active and it is hard when I am in pain to help him like I need to. I know that kids adjust and he is "growing" up fast. Just wondering if anyone else has gone through this. The thought of having this baby naturally scares me because the first time it felt so close to a flare up and I did not do well with the pain. Hope all goes well this time and it probably will, but I thought I would reach out to those of you who might understand.

Thanks for your advice crohnsmommy. I am doing pretty good so far, I am at 38 weeks 3 days (yes, keeping track that closely!) I have been able to maintain my crohn's mainly through my diet. I do a lot of liquid diet's and sometimes skip meals to help alleviate any pain I might be having. So far so good. I am healthy, the baby is growing and we are all doing pretty good. I am nervous about having built up an immunity to the Remicade when I start back on it, but hope that since I will be starting very soon after the baby is born, that it will not cause any problems. I also experienced a flare-up a few days after my first pregnancy and I am preparing myself mentally for another one this time around. Hoping all goes well in the next couple of weeks. Thank you again for your input. It is nice to hear back from other people about what they have experienced and what they have gone through.

I was on Remicade until I found out I was preg and at the time they recommended stopping since it was not classified as safe for the baby. So I went through the pregnancy fine without the Remicade since it had just put me in remission at that point. I flared really bad though less than 48 hours after having the baby (had her about 6 weeks early too). When I got to about 6 months with her I tried to go back on the Remicade (they did not recommend it during nursing either so I had to wait until I was too sick to keep nursing). I went into anaphylactic shock though since I had developed the antibodies to Remicade because of the break. They thought I might be ok going back on since I had only had 4 doses before getting pregnant. So be very careful if you break from the normal routine with Remicade. I did try another biologic, Cimzia, but that one nearly killed me too. They said to not try anymore biologics after that. So be careful with your decisions. I also had the epidural, but since she would not come out naturally after 5 days of waiting in the hospital they had to do an emergency c-section when they thought they might lose me otherwise. I had severe preeclampsia. Good luck.
