Birth Control

Sat, December 22, 2012 5:42 AM

Hey everyone!  I'm 23 years old and was diagnosed with Crohns at 14.  When I was first diagnosed I had daily flare ups, fast forward to today and I would say it's fair to say I'm 90% in remission.  The only time I experience flare ups is during my period or sometimes when I take medication.  With that being said I am not on birth control in fear that the medication will pull me out of remission and/or increase the intensity of my flare ups.  I plan on talking to a doctor soon about the pros/cons of birth control and CD but sometimes I find it difficult to fully trust doctors who are not specialized or living with Crohns.

My question for anyone willing to share their knowledge on the topic is what experiences have you had with different birth controls?  Or does anyone know about any literature that may be useful to read before visiting my doctor.

Thank you!

I have had crohns since I was 16, and like you I would flare up or have worse symptoms during my menstrual cycle.  I am now 25 and like you always feared that adding birth control to the mix may make things worse for me. 2 years ago I decided to talk to my doctor about it.  He suggested Depo probers bc it meant after a few months I would stop getting my period, therefore I wouldn't have those increase of symptoms every month.  I was very concerned when I first started taking Depo, but two years later I can say I'm glad I decided to take it!  Haven't had my period in 20 months and I no longer get worsening symptoms every month.  It is definitely something you should talk w both you GI and gyno about! I hope you get the answers you are looking for!!

Hey! I'm 26 and was diagnosed with Crohn's at 22.  I've been on BC since I was 19. I took Yaz for a while then when they quit making that I took Beyaz until I switched to Nuvaring (I'm horrible at remembering to take the pill) about a year ago. I've never discussed BC with my GI dr but my OBGYN told me I needed to stay on a good birth control until I was in remission and ready for kids. I've never noticed any issues or problems with or from my birth control. But it's definitely up to you and your dr. Good luck!

I'm 27 fixing to be 28 and just got the diagnosis of Crohn's disease and on birth control. I asked my GI if I should continue taking it or not and she informed me that I could / should continue.

Hello,
I am 23 years old too, and was just recently diagnosed with Crohn's a few months ago. I have been on birth control (multiple types over the years) since I was 18. After my diagnosis with Crohn's, I am still on the pill, and have been to both specialists and family doctors and none of them have warned me that I should not be on the pill. I don't feel like it affects my Crohn's, otherwise i may have started having symptoms much earlier since I started at 18. I currently am on the generic of yasmine. Hope this helps :)
