Crohn's and Gluten-Free

Mon, February 03, 2014 5:04 PM

When a family member was firs diagnosed with Crohn's, an M.D. specializing in functional medicine, suggested he eliminate gluten from his diet.  All reading points to possible benefits of being gluten-free with colitis; very little regarding Crohn's.  What are others' views on this?  Thank.

Hi, I'm new to this blog. I have crohn's/ulcerative colits. I stopped eating gluten a few years ago and all symptoms have all but stopped. i.e. fevers, bloody stools, diarrhea, fatigue, canker sores, severe pain in one or the other hip as well as flank pain in my ribs. I have found that many things made with ground corn meal/flour can also cause symptoms. I have found hidden ingredients like, modified food starch, natural flavoring, etc. you can google hidden gluten, for a list. I have discovered these things during my journey by having some of my symptoms return, especially pain in my hips and ribs, when I know I did not knowingly eat gluten. I also know that I am sensitive to GMOs, nightshades, dairy, some nuts and most grains.  Even meat from grain fed animals. Sugar is a bad one too. I'll eliminate a food for three weeks to a month, then reintroduce it and see if it causes symptoms to return. Perfect way to tell if it is a culprit. One food at a time is the most reliable way I found to do it. Allergy testing, years ago, did not show any food allergies. I feel better than ever, way better than I ever did while trying medication only. I have no pain, tons of energy, brain fog is gone, and  I sleep like a baby again. I am presently on no medication at all. I felt like just taking the med's were like removing the check engine light rather than opening the hood and finding the problem. Sad to say, everything I did to find this relief was AMA.
