UC and Wheat Sensitivity

Wed, March 05, 2014 8:32 AM

I am new at this forum so first some background. My diet consisted of primarily rice, fish and vegetables till I met my wife. Then I started having lots of wheat in my diet too. I was diagnosed with UC in 2009 and took balasalzide for it (8/day). Sometimes in case of severe symptoms, I had to take prednisone too. In 2013 while I was searching online, I read on a forum that someone quit wheat and that helped her. So I also noticed that anytime I had wheat, my symptoms got worse. I dropped wheat out of my diet completely and noticed the difference right away. I have not taken medication since July of last year and symptoms have not returned. To be sure, I tried different kinds of wheat. Some wheat (like pizza hut dough) agrees with me whereas some bring back bloating and uneasiness right away. So try to see if dropping wheat out of your diet helps. Try with different kinds of wheat too - unbleached, bleached etc. I have been doing great. My wife uses corn flour, rice flour and gluten-free flour instead of wheat. Hope this helps someone.

Similar to your circumstances with wheat, I too, stopped all wheat from Jan 2013 until Nov 2013. I had a Celiac blood test to see if I may have that issue, too, in addition to the UP and diverticulosis. One portion of the blood test was extremely positive, while the other was not. I did not have the biopsy but decided to try GF, which was so hard for someone raised in the South on biscuits and cornbread. LOL. However, I did great while off of all wheat. Reading the book WHEAT BELLY is an eye opener, for sure, and is a good guide for anyone who wants to understand how wheat has evolved and may help those with sensitivities and stomach issues.  In November, around Thanksgiving, I little by little began eating gluten again to see if perhaps my body had adjusted. Now, in March 2014, I am back to my same problems with UC and diverticulosis. I indeed may have Celiac even though I never had the biopsy for confirmation. I am a teacher and had to give my position up due to extreme left-sided pain, alternating bouts of C/D 3 to 4 times / week, after teaching 17 years. I am determined with the help of this site, to go back to GF, to get back on my Lialda, and to get straightened out. I really, really love teaching and want to return; so, I am hoping to get straightened out / remission to the point of being able to return. Not having the income is difficult; I cannot bring myself to believe that I am disabled and will not try to go on disability. However, when I interview, I am honest with the principals/ that definitely has affected my getting a position. I just don't feel that I am being honest if I don't share that I may have days that I have to be close to a bathroom. Anyway, off my soapbox, but feel that you are right: for some, wheat / gluten being cut from the diet may indeed help, as it did for me for almost a year. Now, I will return to that regimen and try to help myself again! :)
