Weight Gain

Tue, March 18, 2014 2:08 PM

So for the past year or so now I’ve had a really hard time putting on weight.  I have Crohn’s disease and it’s been up and down lately with flares here and there. I would say when I’ve been pretty healthy my weight is usually around 115.  Now I seem to stay right around 100.  I had a couple bad weeks in January and got as low as 94 lbs.  I’ve been trying to change my diet to eat healthier and less processed foods to help alleviate my symptoms.  My typical drugs for Crohn’s are Humira, Pentasa and 6mp.  I’m currently also on a treatment of endocort due to my last flare.  For the past month or so I think I’ve been eating pretty good but I don’t seem to be putting on any weight.  I just don’t get why I never seem to put on any weight?  I definitely feel too skinny, none of my clothes fit anymore and I constantly have people commenting to me about me weight.  Has anyone had this issue? Any advice on how to gain a few pounds?

When my daughter was first dx, she was also dx w/"failure to thrive", being severely under weight and height.  We met with a nutritionist and began working with her on adding calories to every meal.  A good way of thinking about it is everything people would generally eliminate while trying to diet, add in.   Gravy to meats and potatoes, olive oil to veggies, whole milk to cereal.  We also began a food journal as a previous post suggested. This assisted us in pinpointing the culprits.  The addition of "safe" snacks between meals and slowly but surely Lizzie began to grow.  It does take time, just stay the course and good things will come.

Start a healthy diet of dairy products that includes butter and milk. But avoid over intake of these food stuff so as not to have any problems later.
