B12 Deficiency/tolerance of B12 shot

Tue, December 02, 2014 2:52 PM

Hello!

I have been managing my Crohn's for three years now, successfully with lifestyle modifications...food elimination and trying to get a better handle on managing stress.  For the most part it is working well for me.  I immediately removed food that bothered me, especially milk and red meat and have not had any milk and very little red meat since my diagnosis.

Unfortunately I did not know that this would cause a HUGE issue for me with a b12 deficiency.  I have been having lots of symptoms including neurological symptoms and have spent quite a bit of time trying to find a doctor who would Rx a B12 shot on a regular basis.  I have been taking sublingual B12 since last summer and it helps a bit, but, I truly think most of it is excreted as opposed to absorbed due to the Crohns.

Last week I finally got a shot!  I felt so good the next day with the exception that the shot really ripped my intestines apart for most of the day.

Has anyone had experience with B12 deficiency and the same problem with the shot bothering you?
Any advice would be so appreciated.

Many thanks :-)

Hello,

I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease in 1976, at the age of 15. I'm currently on B-12 Injections, I've been on the shots since 1980, after my first surgery I was told that the part of my intestines that absorb B-12 were removed and that I would be on injections once a month for the rest of my life. It does make me feel better, I usually start feeling tired about a week before my shot is due.

Hi Ann-Marie,

When i was first diagnosed with Crohns i also had a B-12 Deficiency. My doctor prescribed me a Shot once a week for a month and then monthly shots after that. I think I did that for almost a year.  I never encountered a problem from getting the shot. I could tell when my body was lacking B12 as I would be very tired all the time and even have sore legs. as soon as I would get the shot it helped immediately. Maybe your body is lacking something else and that is why the shot is bothering you? I have been taking a wellness drink for the last 6 months that is really helping me. I have seen many people with Crohns have good results from drinking it daily. If you want more information or need to talk feel free to e-mail me. baj29@hotmail.com
