Low Residue Diet

Wed, May 27, 2015 10:12 PM

I was recently diagnosed with moderate to severe UC. I am on a (very strict) low residue/fiber diet for the time being and I am having trouble finding things to eat. I used to eat a high fiber diet with tons of fruits, veggies, salads and whole grains. eating all the refined grains and lack of fresh fruits and veggies are making me feel horrible. any tips of how to make healthy food that is allowed?

Hi, my name is Joan and I was told I had ulcerative colitis in 1980.  I struggled with UC for 11 years.  I eventually  became allergic to all the medications I was given, so in 1991 I had to have all my large intestines removed.  Even though I had all the ulcers removed, I still struggled with my diet.  As you may know, the small intestines were not ment to hold the food but to pass the food on as quickly as possible.  I had a J-pouch (a 6 inch portion of my sm intestines opened up and folded back on it's self to create a six inch large intestine) sculped by the doctor.  After all that, I could not believe I still had problems with eating some foods, especially raw foods, fruits and veggies.   A couple of months ago, I was told about a product, Juice Plus.  JP is fruits and veggies in a capsule, and I CAN DIGEST THEM.  I am now getting the nutrition I have missed out on for 35 years.  I have been waiting for this since 1980. You can go to joanmershon.juiceplus.com and  you can go to you tube and type in juice plus and see many video's for yourself.  Try to eat healthy protein smoothies and lots and lots of water.  Try to eat more fish  in your diet, it is easier to digest and stay away from pop.  I hope this helps as a starter and you you can put your condition into remission if you take care of yourself.

Hi there --

I was diagnosed with moderate Crohn's with strictures about a year ago and put on a low residue diet.  I ate nothing but refined grains and soft, low fiber food for roughly 6 months. While adhering to this diet gave my gut time to heal and relax, it was not without consequences.  I lost a significant amount of weight and muscle mass and had very low energy levels.  To my mind low residue diets are not sustainable for the long term.  As my gut healed, I introduced back into my diet softer varieties of lettuce and a bit of raw veg here and there.  I would say that the extent of my raw fruit and veggie consumption amounts to red or green leaf lettuce, bananas, apples (peeled), and melon.  I steam most other vegetables to an almost unpalatable softness, but it beats not having them at all.  After another recent dietary setback and a great deal of frustration over low energy levels and poor nutrient intake, I decided to start juicing.  Juicing has allowed me to incorporate into my diet a wide variety of green, red, orange, and yellow veggies without the residue and anxiety of a flare up.  My energy levels are more consistent, and it’s so nice to taste the freshness of raw vegetables again.  Might this be an option for you?
