My son had his, colon removed 05/04\16 he was diagnosed with uc 04/05/16. Before surgery he had 2 blood transfusion and a picc line. He lost 30 pounds in a month. He was discharged from hospital today for a bacterial infection he is severely anemic and malnourished. At what point does this get better. I read once the colon is removed once you heal from surgery it does. He has an ileostomy bag and suppose to get a jpouch. Im worried he is not making enough progress. Or is this all normal. Please help me

Read my post in response to managing Crohn's without meds. I give a couple of dietary tips for nutrition. Write me back if you have further questions. Your son needs nutrition. I have some ideas.

Hey rhondas36,

Sorry to hear that about your son. I also lost weight over my whole ordeal. I lost about 40 lbs all together, but I am slowly getting it back now. I was also diagnosed with UC, but the medications were not healing my enlarged colon. I had my colon removed on 5/23/16.
I’m not sure what a picc line is, and it seems weird that the hospital would discharge him when he doesn’t seem fit enough to be discharged. For me, I did have a minor setback after the surgery, but that lasted only a few (about 4) days. Since then, I’ve continually gotten better each day. I am very comfortable with emptying/changing the ileostomy bag. My stitches have just about cleared up. I do have two more operations to complete my surgery, but my doctor says everything looks good.
I think for your son, he should try to keep himself hydrated. Continually drink water throughout the day. He should also try his best to eat steadily. Breakfast, lunch and dinner with snacks in-between to keep him nourished. I’ve been staying away from high-fiber foods, spicy foods, greasy and fried foods. I stayed away from raw vegetables (they would need to be cooked for me to eat them). And skin (on chicken, fruits, etc.) should be removed. Meats should be lean, and cooked well done. But make sure they are small portions. I found that this helped me with my eating and digesting. Lastly, try to get some kind of exercise daily. Walking is great. Anything that keeps him out of bed. When I was in the hospital, I would be in the bed pretty much the whole day. My doctors advised me to stand, walk, whatever, just so that I would not constantly be lying in bed. This helps with blood flow, and with digestion.
So, that would be my advice. Stay hydrated. Stay nourished. Get exercise. Get rest. And stay in touch with the doctors. Hopefully this helps. Stay positive and God bless.

Aloha
