Healthy/Non Irritating Fats

Tue, August 02, 2016 10:00 AM

I have UC and need to gain some weight. Fats / processed foods, among other things, irritate my stomach and I'm wondering if y'all have any recommendations for foods to eat that will help me gain weight but are still healthy and good to eat with UC.

Thanks!

Hi there,

I am a Registered Dietitian and a culinary enthusiast.  IBD and pretty much all GI disorders are my specialty.  If you need to increase your healthy fat intake, try cooking with coconut oil and Ghee.  Ghee is actually the fattest part of butter, thus super tasty when cooking it with eggs or chicken (or just about anything).  If you like nuts, eating a variety of nuts and seeds. Snack on gluten free crackers with PB or almond butter with some honey drizzled on top along with coconut shreds.  If you eat oat meal for breakfast, I'd recommend adding pure coconut cream, with added nuts and seeds for extra fat.

If you don't like Avocados but you enjoy guac, then adding guac as a spread to your wraps or sandwiches (GF bread).  Or do you like hummus?  It doesn't have to be traditional chickpea hummus but black bean hummus is also very tasty.

You can also add grape seed oil or olive oil to your salads verses using a traditional ranch dressing.  I also recommend if you are going to fry anything, using grape seed oil to fry your foods.

Hope this helps!

Would you be interested in knowing how I cured colitis? It's a long story, some people don't believe in cures especially if they're simple, and I 'd like to share my solution with anyone who will listen.   Peter

Thanks! Unfortunately I'm not a big fish or avocado fan! I wish I was.. they're so good for you. I do like guac though; I'll just eat a lot of that. ;) And I like rice and chicken so that would be a good meal that I know doesn't irritate my UC.

Cooked fish high has been a good option for me. Also my girlfriend made a delicious white rice porridge with small chunks of chicken. I would try small servings every few hours as opposed to a medium/ large meal. Drink plenty of filtered water.

I am struggling with the same thing. I know avacadoes are supposedly healthy fat plus I like them and they don't seem to trigger any symptoms. Other than that I have gotten to the point that if I crave something in particular and I know it's not a trigger food I go ahead and eat it. Try peanut butter milkshakes made with lactose free milk and frozen yogurt, that is what I seem to not be able to get enough of lately and it doesn't bother the colitis.
