Diet / healthy eatting

Wed, November 02, 2016 1:27 PM

Hello,

I have crohn's disease for the past 15 years.  I can not eat dairy, fried food, most vegetables and fruit, peanut butter anything to oily or fatty.  So I eat the things I can, white bread, white rice, chicken, ground turkey, white flour tortillas.  Cookies, dairy free ice cream. Some pastas.   So as you can imagine I've gained weight over the years.

My first year with this disease, I did have to have a resection.  None since.  However, several flares over the years.

I've tried several diets, all of them call for lots of veggies and fruit.  So I try, I have terrible diarrhea the whole time I'm on the diet.Yes I have tried different types of veggies and fruits. I lose weight, but can't keep up on the "healthy eating" due to my symptoms. Several times the diarrhea is so bad, I don't make it to the bathroom. UGH

What can I do to be healthy and lose weight?

You will either love me or hate me after reading this. I am a dentist and medical author. I have UC. There is no preventive diet or medicin for crohns or UC. You have been wasting your time and pleasure bby restricting your diet. Misinformed doctors want patients to think they have control of what goes wrong so the patient will blame themselves and not the physician for flares.
It is thought that the genetic component to UC and crohns is that we crave carbs. This in turn grows more candidiasis in us and this is thought to promote flares. It is not know yet. I take candidase ( walmart.com) every day, works better and fluconazole on me. I also leanred that carbonated beveerages seem to bloat me. I have an emergency kit that contains budesonide in case of a flare up. I take 3 mg /day for 3-5 days then get on with my life. No side effects and stops the flare within 1 hour. I want to have a normal quality of life, not have to go to the er or have colonoscopies. They do not help at all. We will have the condition our entire lives. A scope only confirms that you have inflamatory cells in your colon. Inflamation does not cause a flare. That is why you are wasting your time and pleasure by resrticting your diet in a futile attempt ot prevent a flare. Hate me or love me?

Hi lorisue...I just posted a similar comment.  I have tried SCD and all of the diets.  None worked for me.  I am struggling right now trying to find foods that meet both Crohns and diabetic limits.  I am at the point of....exercise more is my only choice.

Hope you find your answer soon.

Eating differently only makes you feel a little better . It does nothing to prevent a flare up.

I exceeded the limit so I have to post the rest of my reply to you here. This is part 2 of a 2 part reply :D

Read part 1 first please...

Part 2
Of course that doesn't prove anything scientifically but why would I go through all that trouble of ordering and specifying "no pepper" if I didn't have some strong inner conviction that the pepper really was doing me harm. But in addition to that anything spicy like hot peppers or curry is also bad for my colitis. I have proven this literally hundreds of times now over the past 18 years. Once you identify something that is a "trigger food" it's best if you stay away from eating it. Many people with IBD have problems with spicy foods so you are not alone. Black pepper has similar effect as hot spices do. That is my experience so I don't use it, if I order something and they put it on I scrape it off. I can tolerate small amounts but I don't buy it for home and there is none in my house.

I am replying here to person who has a problem with black pepper. I have colitis now for 18 years, I also found I have problems with black pepper, and many other things too. But I'll stick to that for now. It's been many years since I discovered it and it took me a few years to figure it out. Of course there is no scientific proof but after experiencing more abdominal pain when having it so many times I finally started listening to what my body was telling me. I used to get these bagel sandwiches with bacon and egg, no cheese please as I have some lactose intolerance too. That just creates mucus for me, but does not seem to interfere with my bowels. But one time I got the bagel sandwich it had so much pepper I couldn't eat it. So the next time I called to order it I said "I'll have a bacon and egg - no pepper no cheese". They thought it was a strange request but I kept asking for the same thing and after a while I got the nickname of being "Mr no pepper no cheese". I thought that was pretty funny as they didn't mean any harm and I didn't mind. I changed my job and stopped going there for a few years but recently went back and when I called them I said "this is Mr no pepper no cheese" and of course they remembered me and were glad to hear from me. They are very nice people and they make a great bagel sandwich. Anyway I thought you might like my story about being called Mr No Pepper No Cheese!

I hope this helps you. Best regards - Jeffer03

I have definitely found many things bother me, like dairy, fatty foods, chocolate, many fruits (especially bananas), and more. I suggest drinking lots of water and maybe try cooking the vegetables. Most raw don't bother me but I've heard cooking them can give you different results than eating them raw.

I would like to suggest that eat as much healthy food as you can. If you are suffering from a disease then  you must take advice from a dietician. They are well known of what to be taken in the diet and they will also plan a timetable with a diet chart. You should also avoid oily and fast foods.

Staying healthy is the top most priority. In order to stay healthy and fit my cousin has started adopting a programme entrainement sportif program. It is also helping him to loose his body weight and fats. This program is available online at this website http://www.cellublue.com/fr/wonder_body_guide.php . Eating a healthy diet is also a major way for getting a fit and toned body.

I tried different diets, but had really good success with the SCD diet and later on the anti-fungal diet. In either case,  the diets call for an elimination of sugar and fruits and a focus on fresh proteins (beef, chicken, fish, eggs, etc.), fresh vegetables, and nuts. I found nuts and anything made with nut flour, in particular, helpful to gain weight. My two go-to nuts are cashew nuts and almond flour. There are any number of recipes on the web that use almond flour instead of regular flour (which I can't eat). Hope that is helpful.

Hi Lorisue,

Like you i have to be careful what i eat.  I have perianal Crohn's which means my Crohn's is in my rectum not in my intestines. Like you I have to be very careful what I eat.  I cannot have any red meat, no fruits or vegetables of any kind, and I am lactose intolerant, no nuts, no popcorn.  I have also gained weight from not being able to eat the "right foods", and I find myself always fatigued because of Crohn's.  As far as losing weight I have been to several nutritionists that claim they can help me, but the problem is they have a one size fits all solution and it does not work for individuals with Crohn's.  I was fortunately able to find myself a nutritionist that specializes in IBD.  I have not yet been to see this nutritionist because she is very expensive, but I at least have somewhere to turn.  My advice is try to fin yourself a nutritionist that specializes in Crohn's if at all possible.  Good luck to you. :)
