I've completely removed all colitis symptoms through diet and nutrition

Sat, February 25, 2017 4:31 PM

I'm going to start by saying I am not a healthcare professional, I have no affiliation with anything I mention. Everything I mention is speculation on how I think it helped me and I just want you to be informed and provide you with information so you can make the best decision for you. I am 27-year-old health nut that was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis one year ago. I hate prescription drugs. There was no way I was going to take medication the rest of my life. 1. Diet change. I made this change in two steps. Step 1 was starting the Ketosis diet. This diet is supposed to break down to 25% protein, 70% health fats, 5% carbs. Your carbs only come from green veggies. I think this helped me because my body had no carbs to feed off of, which can be known to flare up symptoms for some people. Step two of the diet is intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting is when you pick an 8-10 hour window you eat in each day. There are a lot of health benefits linked to fasting. One of which is it causes your body to find different ways to burn energy, primarily using your fat cells. Now supplements. The most obvious is a probiotic. I started taking 50billion live culture for men. The second supplement is really out of left field.  It's science-backed, but it's essentially a supplement that most your bodies NAD and ability to produce NAD which is what your body uses for energy. My theory in using this supplement is that so much of my bodies energy is absorbed to fighting this disease there is nothing left. If I can find a way to get more energy, maybe it can fight the disease better and also provide me with more energy....Anyways, this is how I hacked my body and have currently conquered all my symptoms. If you have questions I'm happy to answer them. I wish you the best in your journey.

Great post.
Are you still on the diet? How are you doing on the plan and with your health?  I’d like to begin the diet and I’m looking for any suggestions for those of us with UC. Diet plans/meal plans would be greatly appreciated as well.
Thank you,
Tori

Hi, guys. Thanks for sharing your experience and continue the discussion. Ulcerative Colitis is a disease which can't be cured by treatment. It can be cured with diet control and yoga and also by reading Healing inspirational poetry like Brenden Pettingill's . Thanks.

I'm curious if your Dr. helped you come off the medications, or did you do that yourself?  Did you just stop them or wean off and if you had an immediate flare up?

My diet is similar. I started following the Autoimmune Paleo Diet and Specific Carbohydrate Diet with my last flareup. I'm also medication free. This is after being on Remicade, 6MP, steroids, and mesalamines only two years ago.

In comparison to the Ketogenic Diet, I probably consume more carbohydrates than the Ketogenic Diet but less than the average American diet since I don't consume bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, ...

I ate only bone broth when my previous flareup was so bad that I was throwing up everything, and then I continued consuming bone broth to heal from all the blood loss. I then added fermented foods.

I also do intermittent fasting by waiting at least 12 hours from dinner to breakfast.

I also take supplements for improving digestion and reducing inflammation, such as Curcumin, fish oil, enzymes, and probiotics in addition to other supplements for nutrition, such as folate, B12, Grow Bone, and iron.

Yes, it's a lifestyle. Most people, including those who have IBD, don't understand how I can be on such a strict diet. But the people closest to me, those who saw me when I was very ill, can see a huge difference in my health.

I am also medication free for 4+ years from ulcerative colitis using a ketogenic style lifestyle (minus the dairy for many patients may be required).   I also love intermittent fasting.   We absolutely can heal from this disease.   It's not one size fits all but if you combine Paleo autoimmune protocol with a very low carb/high fat lifestyle, you will definitely be on the right track.   I mostly ate bone broth, zucchini and ground meat for a few months and healed completely along with high dose probiotics and also using things like oregano oil to kill any potential bad bugs in my gut.   It's a journey and it's a lifestyle but it's so incredibly empowering to be in control of your health and healing.    My "go to" safe foods are always ground meat and veggies along with healthy fats.  I say ground meats because it's easier to digest if you have digestion issues.  I also eat organic and grass fed and pasture raised animals because we all need to avoid the hormones, steroids, herbicides, glyphosate, etc in our food supply as much as possible.
I also eat nuts/nut butters, eggs, avocados (amazing food for us) etc but if I feel extra fatigue or lung issues (my weak points) I will go back to a more Paleo autoimmune diet without eggs, nuts, nightshades which can cause fatigue and lung issues, arthritis and inflammation in general.   We absolutely can heal ourselves.  It will take hard work and it will be trial and error for everyone.   Start slow with the healthy fats like coconut oil, olive oil, ghee, animal fats and build up.   The feeling of being empowered to heal and being in control of your disease is incredible.   Reach out to a Naturopath or Functional Medicine MD for additional support.  Listen to podcasts about SCD, keto, Paleo, GAPs diet and read books.   Many many stories of healing.   You can do it.   There is tons of conflicting data out there so seek out the info on the above protocols.  We can heal.   Traditional nutrition which I have studied in the past like high carb, low fat is not a healing protocol but still promoted in most non holistic environments.   I ate that way for 40 years and I'm now eating low carb high fat and the healthiest I e ever been.   Cheers and prayers to all for health and healing

I would be interested to here more about your diet and supplements, as I was in remission for 8 years and have since, had two flares with minor symptoms, but lasting a long time.

I want to share what happened to my daughter so that others might benefit and open their minds to the fact that very good doctor's can be wrong. My daughter had constant stomach pain in her middle and high school age days. It starting getting worse and worse in her late teens to early twenties. She had nausea and blood in her stool and her stomach hurt every time she ate. She ended up with a infection at the beginning of her lower intestine.

As a result of the infection we went to not one but two highly rated specialists in a large metropolitan area. They ran all the scopie tests including the camera pill one and blood test and said she had crohn's. My daughter found an article that said celiac disease is often mistaken for crohn's or IBS. She was in her late teens or early twenties when cut the gluten out of her diet and no more pain, nausea or bloody stools.

I'm not posting this to give any one false hope but to make sure people know that doctor's can be wrong and this is something you can try to see if it works for you or not. All of her pain and irritation was due to the allergy happening in her stomach. We never had to have her tested for celiac's because she knew she was better when she didn't eat gluten and as soon as she did she had pain again. She is now 28 and gluten doesn't bother her as much as it did at the time but she moderates her intake of it. She stopped taking the medicine they gave her for crohn's when she found that she had no pain if she didn't eat gluten. It's important to know that gluten can be in spices, sauces etc and not just wheat products.

I can't tell you how relieved I was that my daughter had something that was more controllable. I hope this helps others too.

This is really encouraging to hear. I have always been a health nut, personal trainer/athlete and when I was diagnosed back in 2011 I had a really hard time of it. I've been on Remicade for about 5 years now, but hate being on such a serious medication non-stop.

Remicade has never really abated all of my symptoms and I've had to adjust my diet in order to feel well. I was paleo/low carb and have just taken the plunge into the ketogenic diet for about a month now. It's really incredible the effect it's had on reducing my symptoms in such a short time.

I'm meeting with my doctor tomorrow as I want to catch him up on my progress, but I'm not looking forward to what I imagine will be a very stressful conversation ("ketosis is unhealthy, etc"). I want a long term plan to try and go off Remicade, but my doctor has been very resistant to that idea for a long time now. ("you will flare up and end up in the hospital again if you go off this...").

Anyway, it's just good to see this is working for someone else as I've read very little research on its effects on IBD. Any advice you have for me would be greatly appreciated.
