Wanting to run long distances with a J-Pouch

Mon, July 31, 2017 11:30 PM

I'm 38 years old, was diagnosed with UC when I was 17.  After 2 years of prednisone and various other drugs, had colon removed at age 19 with a J-pouch.  1 year later, I had an ulcer at the exit of my stomach swell shut.  2 surgeries later, my stomach has an extra hole in the bottom of it with a bypass.  Had problems over the next several years with pouchitis and a perianal fistula, my old doctor retired and the new one ran a few more tests and determined I had CD.  He started me on Humira, started building up a tolerance, switched to Remicade; built up a tolerance for it too, also had a pretty bad reaction.  Now I am halfway through the loading dose for Entyvio.

I really enjoy running, last year I ran 4 half marathons, nothing fast, but I finished.  This year started out with a bleeding ulcer in the stomach again that put me in the hospital with anemia and knocked the wind out of me.  I'm having a hard time getting back.  I had 2 I Vs of iron, but still can't seem to get my rhythm.  My biggest problem is that I try to eat healthy, but with the scare tissue, if anything like nuts or raw veg. hits it, it may or may not get stuck.  When it does, it hurts sooo bad and it's like it takes me backwards in my training, and is very frustrating.  I have already missed 2 half marathons this year, with another closing in on me.

How do I eat healthy, keep my calories/carbs up for a half marathon (possibly a full marathon), without aggravating the crohn's or causing a blockage or pouchitis.  Also what would I take during a run to keep my fuel stores up that won't cause me to fly to the portapotty?  Any help would be great.  Thanks.

Sincerely,
Charles

I'm new around here and don't know that I have a right to comment, but am throwing my 2 cents in. I like to run also and love riding my mountain bike. I have CD only diagnosed 6/16.  I would recommend protein powder to help. I stopped nuts and most raw veggies right away from a list of foods hard to digest. I avoid red meat, fried foods, fatty foods. I still eat bread, pastas but have found sugar sweets make me feel bad. Lots of water. I like Greek yogurt -Dannie triple zero that has less sugar but not artificial. Maybe try something like a Lara bar that doesn't have nuts? With your situation it really sounds like protein would be very helpful in healing and strength. I still do other veggies- salad, tomato, I really want to do a half marathon in February- would be my first since diagnosed but third overall. Also, find biking really helps the endurance and leg muscles. Sorry I rambles so much- don't know if I helped; wish you all the best. Your story is of great encouragement to me and I know it would be to others!
