Newly diagnosed help with diet

Thu, July 12, 2018 12:02 PM

My son was diagnosed with Crohns in January. He is 15. So hes a kid and wants to eat like a kid. Is it ok to still eat chips, ice cream, Burger King here and there like kids do? Or should I put a complete stop to all unhealthy food? Hes so young so I still want him to feel like a kid and act like one but I also dont want to risk any further harm. So Im not sure what to do. Hes a picky food eater when it comes to dinners. Doesnt really eat much meat. Help me with a good diet for a 15 year old.

Hi,

I have learned a lot in past few years-  Write to me in Instagram - im  more active there @rawfoodel

I say basically switch to plant based diet( whole foods - not porcessed)

Absolutely NO DAIRY, NO COFFEIN, NO SUGAR (Cakes etc), NO GLUTEN (PASTA PIZZA) NO ALKOHOL,

Eat fruits, veggies, juicing( fresh pressed (carrot, cabbage etc)
Steamed cooked veggies , cucumber, tomato, lettuce, sweet potato etc

Hope this helps

I was diagnosed when I was 18 and was the queen of unhealthy food. Later realized i was maybe so picky because that food that did not make me feel like crap after. I definitely feel better since I have changed my eating and added healthy foods but I still eat chicken nuggets and candy when i dont feel well because it stays with me and does not cause pain. I found a great GI who spoke the best words to me... every single diet you read about as being a "crohns diet or IBD diet throw it out the window". Its about being able to keep found in your body and not become malnourished. I dont have food that causes a flare but i definitely have some that help me during one or safe foods when you have to go out to a dinner or for your son maybe a sports team or party or something. I would just recommend keeping a log of what makes him feel lousy or not and if he does go through a flare, making sure he keeps his nutrition.

I would highly recommend at least cutting out dairy. There are plenty of good non-dairy ice cream, milk and cheese options out there. Everything else should be in moderation. I would also recommend adding a probiotic or digestive enzyme daily.
