Going Sugar Free

Thu, November 05, 2020 7:37 AM

I am curious about people's experiences with living a no sugar life.  My gastroenterologist and my primary care doctor both told me that sugar is pro-inflammatory.  I recently looked up some pubmed articles showing the relationship between added sugar and inflammation in Crohn's Disease.  I have been convinced that I need to stop the white stuff.  What are other people's experiences with doing this?  I'm a bit nervous because I LOVE SUGAR.  I specifically want to learn how to treat myself without it.  I am CD, currently in remission on Stelara but I want to do this to maintain my long term health and not be working against the Stelara.  I want to make this medication last as long as possible.

I love sugar too but made drastic changes to cut/limit sugar (especially added sugar, I still eat fruit, for example). It changed my health in many ways. It's not easy, that's for sure. I lost 20 pounds, sleep like a baby, and am overall healthier.

Hello, I understand you are looking for support related to diet, we have several resources on diet https://www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org/diet-and-nutrition  Additionally, I have provided more details and resources below.

Diet and Nutrition

Living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) means paying special attention to what you eat. Eating certain foods can help ease your symptoms, while other things you like to eat may make your symptoms worse.

Hello! I have stopped eating sugar several times, but I can't give it up completely. The thing is,I have been trying to drink coffee wiithout sugar,so far it works. The main this is discipline and understanding that it's better for my body. I am trying my best.

Hello oh, I've been sugar-free for three and a half months now. I can focus a lot better and it takes a while to get rid of the Candida in the intestines after stopping sugar. Gluten was a major contribution towards my colitis. I'm 64 years old and suffered from the age of 20 to 40. The core cause was picking up something over 20 lb which crushes discs in my neck and back cutting off nerves to the colon. I hope you find your core cause. Everybody's different. Blessings Stan
