Wheat-Free Diet?

Tue, April 03, 2012 5:30 PM

Does anyone have experience with a wheat-free diet? My GI said it may help with my persistent CD and is less restrictive than a gluten-free diet. I was diagnosed with CD a little over a year ago, have had 2 surgeries (resection & strictureplasty and most recently removed my gallbladder) and the disease continues to flare-up and cause ulcers and pain. I've been on Remicade for almost a year and it has helped but has not kept the disease at bay. I just added methotrexate shots to try and get the disease into remission. I've also tried steriods, Entocort, Asacol, Lialda, 6-MP, and Imuran. Each of those either didn't help or I had terrible side effects and couldn't stay on the medicine.

Kath, that was an interesting comment.  Why is it important to get checked for Celiac disease before removing gluten from the diet?  I think it is a good idea to stop ingesting gluten whether a person has Celiac disease or not.  Gluten is a bad thing for the body.

CCM, I'd say get rid of all the bread, wheat, and gluten.  You don't NEED any of that.

I am on a gluten free diet because my endoscopy found "scalloping" and celiac sprue  in my upper small intestine and my lab work also showed I have the gene and antibodies for Celiac disease. If I eat anything with gluten I have severe pain in my side and abdomen and bad diarrhea.
When I started g-free I felt a difference immediately. I felt as though my whole body was menthol-ated, felt very fresh almost minty. I think it was the absence of burning or irritation that my body was accustomed to.
Try getting rid of as much gluten as you can. You might as well, there is nothing to lose and worth giving it a try. It is best to get checked for celiac before you remove gluten from your diet though.
Good luck to you!
