Drinking and colitis

Tue, September 04, 2012 5:21 PM

I was diagnosed with colitis last year and am still transitioning to understanding how to manage my symptoms, exploring diet and hoping that I might be able to achieve remission (don't we all??) I'm wondering if anyone else struggles with the effects drinking alcohol has on symptoms and flares? I'm finding that sometimes I'm okay, but then sometimes it can trigger a bad flare. As ever, anytime I do something I know might trigger a flare, I end up feeling really guilty and awful, which only triggers stress and makes matters worse. Do most people with IBD simply quit drinking altogether?

Colitis is an inflammatory condition of the large intestine (colon). It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and inflames the colon wall. The symptoms can vary from mild to severe, depending on how severe the colitis is. If you focus on a healthy lifestyle and good habits, then check https://getshek.com/beating-a-dwi-dui-in-minnesota/ to get the latest info about beating a dui and those things will become easier for you to do. But what's less well known is that even moderate drinking can cause symptoms in people who don't have IBD, such as diarrhea and weight loss.

I continued to drink alcohol for years with uc and found the same thing. Sometimes it was fine other times it was not. Since my uc has gotten more active in the last year, I have stopped drinking alcohol and have noticed a positive difference!

I was diagnosed with UC last year and haven't drank since.  I'm a very cautious person, so just didn't want to take the risk.  Also was put on flagyl recently and was told I absolutely should not drink because the drug acts like an anti-alcoholic so I would get super sick if I drank anything!  I know they say you should not drink while in a flare.  My dad has had UC for almost 50 years and he still drinks but it's the occasional beer at home or drink if we're out at a restaurant.  Maybe you were in a little bit of a flare and didn't know it and that's why it made you sick sometimes and not others?  Best thing you can do is listen to your body.  It'll let you know when it's had enough.  Good luck!
