22 and just looking for support

Tue, August 12, 2014 1:28 PM

Im 22 years old and I have Ulcerative Proctitis. Been dealing with daily symptoms for the better part of 3 years since 2011. Constant flare ups have made it impossible for me to live a normal life. I may just be feeding into my own sickness by being scared to leave the house because of my UP but its tough going out and trying to act like nothing is wrong with people who have no idea what its like to deal with these symptoms. I have been unemployed for 2 years now after keep a job became to difficult with all the stress, and the not eating all day to try and control my symptoms. I cant remember a time were my body has felt at peace or comfortable at all. Its been 3 years and medication hasnt helped at all and Im scared to be prescribed something that might have serious side effects. Ive been feeling pretty hopeless for a long time and just needed people to discuss what we are all go through so I dont go completely crazy. Been reading some peoples stories its helped a lot seeing that there are other people who know how Im feeling

If you have someone that you're close to don't be afraid to let them in. Sharing your worst fears and secrets can be a big relief and also you never know what that person may share in return. We all have embarrassing secrets.

Hello mrsgali, Thank you for sharing that with me. Luckily since posting this I've been able to work this past year. Granted it was a struggle but I made it work. My personal life is another story, but I guess that will always be the case as long as I am trying to deal with my symptoms and struggle to balance my condition and a normalish life.

First off, you're not alone.

I have Crohn's and at one point I was scared to leave the house too because I would have accidents in public. It was so embarrassing. Medication helped me get better, and support from family and friends definitely helped me stay sane. But I really didn't tell my friends about the accidents. I was just too embarrassed.

Try taking baby steps, if you have a dog take short walks and see how that goes. If its successful, try longer trips out.

good luck!
