Going into the Sun/tanning when on Remicade

Mon, March 14, 2011 4:21 PM

Okay so I have been diagnosed with UC for over a year.  My UC has only gotten worse since my first major flare in July....I have been stuck in this dark tunnel for months now being on prednisone to 6MP, to now Remicade.  I know tanning in a salon or going to the beach sitting in the sun all day is bad for you, however I am only 23 and i live on Long Island.  We love to be dark over here. hahaha...Since starting my Remicade I stopped going tanning at the salon.  However, when i was on the 6 MP i was tanning once a week.  I just wanted to know if anyone has been tanning or in the sun while being on Remicade?  I hate how I have to give up my life for this disease.  First its the new diet, stop drinking, bring down my workouts, and now stop going tanning!!! someone please give me something good to read!

I can let you know i am on remicade and i spend my whole summer in the sun. I have been on it for a year and no one told me not to be in the sun. My doctor even knew i was out in the sun all day. I work boy scout summer camps and we our out in the sun from 7 in the morning until the sun goes down at night. I am a white person but i turn nice and tan in the summer with out any real bad side affects from the sun. I would suggest that you take it slow at first and see what happens. Worse case you may have to wear sunblock.

Hmm... I didn't know you were not supposed to be in direct sunlight with Remicade.  I have Crohn's, but I have been on Remicade for about a year and a half now.  All of my jobs are outdoors and labor intensive due to it being hard to find a good job with it (I oyster on weekends during school and build scaffolds/construction during summer) and I have never had any ill effects from just being in the sun.  All my time is spent outdoors, I love it, and see sun very frequently for long periods of time.  So I would say give it a try and just test the waters with it a few times.

Thanks for your advice...it just stinks because a lot of the self tanners i am allergic to! hehe that's a whooooole nother story. However, i was thinking about the spray tanning...I'll check it out.  So, when you are on remicade you get burnt easier or do you have discoloring from the sun?  I am 100% Italian so I never usually burn, however I don't know wha tto except from the remicade.  I guess I will be buying spf 70 this summer hehe.  Thank you sooooo much.

I'm from NJ and we love to be tan here too!  I understand completely your desire to be a bronzed beauty.   It unfortunately isn't a good idea with the meds you are currently on (personally, I wouldn't risk it)......who wants to be a blown up lobster!  So, given the fact the tanning beds are out of the question, as well as the natural sunlight, it still leaves you with a couple more "safer" options.   Self-tanners (they have come a long way over the years....are less orangy and fragrance free) or spray tanning (you might even find a master who can spray on a little muscle tone)!

I know how hard it is, imagine my situation when my daughter was diagnosed and put on a sulfa med (no-no sun) she was 4.   There was no way I was going to deprive her of our beach or pool.   I went to the pharmacy and purchased the highest spf and reapplied very, very frequently.   Best of luck to you.
