life after prednisone

Sat, August 06, 2011 9:23 AM

My 18 year old daughter was diagnosed with severe crohns in March and was put on high doses of Prednisone. She has finally weaned off of that medication and is still on 6MP. Her appetite has decreased significantly and she is very active again and is feeling better. However, the side effects from the prednisone are not going away, i.e. the moon face, the fatty abdomen, the unwanted hair growth the weight gain, etc. Can anyone tell me when those symptoms subside, if ever?

Hello!  My name is Emily and I am a 23 yr old UC patient who used to be on high doses of prednisone.  I was on it from Jan 2010-April 2010.  It took a few months for me to start getting back to normal with the help of my doctor/family/friends.  I promise you everything will go away in time!  One thing I had to work on was diet.  Once I got the clearance to eat healthy again and less carb-like food, I began eating healthy like normal again and exercising my stress relief after school/work.  I wish your daughter all the luck with this!  I rarely took pictures last year because of my moonface, but it has finally gone away!  The hair loss is more tricky for me.  I have used nioxin to help with the thinning of my hair, which seems to help!  Good luck!!

I was on 40 mg of prednisone for 3+ months, and my moon face disappeared about a month after I had totally tapered off. It will go away! Just hang in there :)
There are a number of websites that offer makeup tips for round faces. I felt a little better about my appearance when I used "contouring" makeup techniques. Good luck!

Hi D,

Tell your daughter to hang in there.  I have also had to be on prednisone numerous times - from your normal 40 mg. oral boost, to 100+ cc IV boost.  And, yes, the side effects will subside.  Time lines are tricky because we all react different, but if she is able to stay off the prednisone, she will see those symptoms go away.

Your continued encouragement and support will mean a lot as she adjusts to dealing with these type of issues.  The more her close friends can know about IBD and the effects of the meds she is on can also help.

Thanks for the response NeverEnding. It helps tremendously to have some time frame in mind. It seems her moon face is already going down a little, but she is still concerned about it, so hopefully she will see more results over the next month! Thanks so much and I hope you continue to improve and feel better as well.

Hi! I was (unreasonably... but  nevertheless) on Prednisone from pretty much October of 2010 until this past June... whenever I would almost be tapered off the Prednisone, my symptoms would come back, and they'd up the dosage to where I'd started at until I went elsewhere for treatment.  I was definitely swollen, had moon face, was losing tons of hair, and got crazy acne. Anyway, at the end of June I was done with the Prednisone, and now the shape of my face is almost back to normal, I'm not swollen in my arms or legs anymore, I don't lose much hair, and my acne is a lot better than it was.  I'm kind of thinking that by the end of the month I'll be pretty much back to normal... which would put me at 2 monthes for my body to get back to normal.  I know everybody's different, but sometimes it's nice to kind of have a timeline to go by. Hope it helps, and hope she's feeling  better!! Take care!
