Recently diagnosed and looking for help

Thu, October 18, 2012 10:34 AM

hi everyone,
i am 25 and was recently diagnosed lymphatic colitis. a little background information... in july i took an antibiotic for a sinus infection and 2 weeks later my life was complete *** . i was diagnosed with c.diff and after three rounds of antibiotics i thought i was all good. well about a week after my third round of abx i started having the same issues, 2 negative c. diff tests later and my gi dr. decided to do a colonoscopy. (that was last thursday). last night the dr. called me to tell me i had lymphatic colitis. i had never heard of such a thing. i was put on medicine right after my colonoscopy to help with the diarrhea and since it is working the dr. wants me to keep taking it for the next month. i will then go in for a follow up appointment. here are some of my questions... is this something i will have to deal with for the rest of my life? will it just come and go? what are some things that will set it off? i read some stuff last night about modifying my diet, keeping a food log and taking probiotics, but are there any other suggestions people have? i don't want to spend time feeling bad for myself... i did have a little bit of a why me attitude since this all started but now that i know exactly what this is i want to move on with my life and find solutions. thanks!

Jess,

You will have UC for the rest of your life...there is no known cure for it right now. As far as your symptoms go, they may go a way for a few days, weeks, months or even year depending on what medication your GI doctor puts you on and how well your body responds to the medication. Triggers vary from patient to patient....for example: stress might trigger person X's symptoms and not person Y's symptoms. I would highly recommend keeping a food journal and doing an elimination diet (ie: stop eating certain foods for a given amount of time, recording what symptoms you experience while avoiding a certain food, reintroducing the food back into the diet, and recording your symptoms again. I would also suggest talking with your family and educating them about your disease (that way they can be supportive and try to help in any way possible). Sleeping and exercising may help as well.

You are not alone and there are people here to support you. Hope this helps!
