Proctectomy

Wed, August 16, 2017 12:04 PM

After a perforated colon with abscess I had my entire colon removed(UC path report) Rt lower abd ileostomy placement Oct '14 Rectum was left even tho it was known I had inflammation there. The discharge from my rectum has been horrible.. only way to put it. May'15 had perianal abscess surgically opened, sept '15 another perianal abscess that opened on its own, another one early this yr where I had pilonidal cyst when I was young(I'm 69).. now these 3 places are fistulas..the only thing my gastroenterologist tried was mesalimine.. didn't seem to help so I have tried a few natural remedies.. I don't really want to go thru proctectomy but it seems I have no choice.. anyone been thru this operation? I'm thinking I will need to lay on my side rather than sitting after surgery.. also I've been told #1 complication is wound infection..

I'm having  a new drain put in next week.  Going thru all the pre surgery issues today.  Will feel so much better afterwards.

Any updates?  My new GI prescribed flagil as an anti biotic, hopefully the pus generating can be addressed.  No stoma here, I have heard this would pretty much alleviate any thoughts of infection.  Just keep it clean!
i have had 4 operations on this fistula since just before Christmas.  Have one annoying drain left in and the leakage seems to be under control a bit.
See my surgeons in early October to determine next steps.
i am 64, had the same cyst as you when I graduated HS in 71.

Go to a colorectal surgeon and see about having drains put in.  I have terrible problems with fistulas but the drains help.
