Newly diagnosed with Crohns

Fri, November 23, 2018 9:22 AM

Hello Everyone,

I have been avoiding coming on to this forum to ask questions because it means admitting to myself that I have Crohn's. I have been trying to avoid it.

Anyway, I have been diagnosed with Crohn's recently. The doctors took a very long time to do a diagnosis because I also had other complications and symptoms.

I have been put on steroids recently, prednisone. I was to start with 8 tablets a day for one week and cut down by one tablet each week.

Anyway, I noticed a huge surge in appetite. I am constantly hungry and eating all the time. Secondly, my face shape is also changing, others have noticed. I spoke to my doctor today, and she said they are both side effects. Although they often happen to people who have been taking steroids for a long time.

I just wanted to connect with others who have taken prednisone, and to confirm that these are normal symptoms. Do they go once I stop taking prednisone?

Thank you.

It is normal. It is not just with taking steroids a long time. It is with taking large dose of steroids too. The symptoms take some time to go away after stopping prednisone. I had IBD since 9. I had a flare in may and finished prednisone in july. My symptoms are now gone.

Ryan, I was also recently diagnosed with Crohn's... just over a week ago. I started on prednisone and I've definitely seen a spike in appetite. I eat all the time, even when I'm having stomach pains. How has the medication helped your symptoms? My doctor prescribed a lower dose because I was so small from losing weight, but I haven't been feeling as good as I expected. I may need to ask for my dosage to be increased.

Prednisone has lots of bad side effects.  I too was hungry all the time and gaining weight like crazy.  I got rid of the sweets and stocked up on celery. It gave me cataracts, mood swings, osteoporosis.  It shuts down your adrenal gland so you have to taper off slowly.  When I did quit prednisone, I broke out in hives, which eventually covered my whole body.  Don’t make any changes without consulting your doctor. Sadly, it was the only thing that worked for me.

Hi Sandro,

Thanks. Yes, it helps. I spoke to my doctor yesterday.

I need to start watching my food intake as it affects your appetite. And also in rare circumstances, it slightly changes your face shape. Both of these are apparently known issues.

I am tempted to reduce my steroids faster than the recommendation from the doctor. Although the steroids have made me feel great.

I suppose there is no such thing as a free lunch :)

Thanks.

Hi Ryan,
I also was recently diagnosed with crohns. I’m also taking prednisone, when I first started taking it I definitely noticed a spike in appetite but it started to taper as the mg amount did
Hope this helps a little :)
