Process of Diagnosis

Fri, February 08, 2019 7:45 PM

Today I had my second colonoscopy in the past 3 months.  I had my first in Oct. 2018 as a routine exam for hitting age 50.  During that patches of redness in the cecum and ascending colon with a 3mm stricture at the hepatic flexure (between the ascending & tranverse colon).  Biopsies were taken, which showed no cancer and inconclusive for Crohn.  I was referred to GI and today had second colonoscopy, which showed some ascending colon to have redness granularity and ulcerations, along with the stricture as described above, unchanged.  I will now be having a CT entrography with and without contrast to determine if there is involvement of the small bowel.  This will be done before discussing next steps for treatment.

Symptoms for me have been diarrhea for years, better with some diet modification, but often some urgency and have had a few times where I could not make it to the bathroom, which thankfully have been embarrassing, but able to change clothes and not noticed by others.

It seems a relief to know there is a possible diagnosis for some of the symptoms I have lived with for years, but also apprehensive about the diagnosis.  Have a extended cousin who died of complications from his crohns, so know the possibilities of complications.

Right now just venting on my journey, and glad to know others are there making the way through diagnosis, continuing to live a full life and management with medications/diet.

Thanks for reading and will keep updated on my process...

Thanks Jenn.  I had the CT this past week, which showed no significant involvement of the small bowel at this time.  I meet with the crohn's specialist on 2/27/19 to determine treatment strategy and options. Trying to take this one step at a time, dealing with symptoms which now have a reasoning, but not looking to ad a bunch of adverse effects from medications to the mix.
