Biopsies

Thu, May 09, 2019 11:03 PM

Hello, I had a colonoscopy today because I have blood in my stool and the doctor told me that I have ulcerative colitis. He said he would call me in medicine and see me in a month but then I found out he did biopsies and now I am really scared. Does anyone know why he would do biopsies?

Hi,

Yes, that's right, biopsies are definitely a routine part of a colonoscopy.  It helps determine even better whether a patient has IBD, and which type.  It can also rule out other possible ailments, such as different cancers in the colon.  Have you received your biopsy results yet?

Biopsies are standard and normal part of a colonoscopy.
They use them to confirm diagnosis, as the visual assessment the doc gets during the procedure is not always perfectly clear.
